Florida State Parks - Grand Tour

Our simple plan is to visit every RV-able Florida State Park, hike their trails with our dog, and enjoy all of it. Along the way we take pictures and make videos, we update our website and our YouTube Channel. Considering how much there is to do in Florida there's an extremely good chance we'll never leave the state, which is fine with me.

There are 175 state parks in Florida. Sixty allow camping. Using RV as a filter 52 SP?s appear.

Rainbow Springs State Park is nice, just don't go to the head waters, the camping sites are not there or even on the same road.  They are on the other side of the river.

Florida State Parks are among the best in the nation.  We have stayed at 11 in our motor home and visited an additional eight parks on day trips.  Our favorite so far is Myakka River where we kayak at least once each year.  The only negative is trying to get campground reservations when you want them at many parks.

Rodman Recreation Area Campground - 1 week
Salt Springs Recreation Area (Ocala National Forest) - 2 weeks
Alafia River SP - 12 days
Lake Griffin SP - 2 days
Gold Head Branch SP - 2 weeks

We'll also be staying at:

Crooked River State Park, GA - 12 days & 7 days
Lake Powhatan Recreation Area, NC - 5 days

This winter we are visiting 9 Florida State Parks.  6 that we have never been to.  Making reservations at some of them far 11 months in advance.

First, Florida State Parks accept reservations 11 months in advance.  That means November, 2019 is pretty much already full at the most popular parks, so you need to get online and make reservations FAST!

Second, Florida State Parks allow you to leave early and get a refund for days not used if they are at the end of your reservation.  So, if I had a week remaining on my reservation, and I decided to leave tomorrow, I could check out in the morning and get a refund on the remaining days.  You might want to verify this, but it has been true in the past.

Third, there are a handful of COE campgrounds in Florida along the Okeechobee Waterway.  Great places with locks and dams along the way, but very popular at $15 per night senior rate.  And another great place is Midway Campground, part of the Big Cypress National Preserve, also at $15 per night for seniors with a federal card. And don't skip Shark Valley for a great bike ride.

We really like Midway Campground on the Tamiami Trail. We won't make it there this winter, but it has been a regular stop for us in past years. And don't miss a stop at the smallest post office in the country while you're there...
