We are planning a trip in our Tiffin Phaeton next month from Florida to Springfield, MA. Should we avoid 95 in the NE metro areas? What's the best route around? TY!

Having done it quite a few times, I'd veer West to completely avoid the NYC megalopolis.

Such as; Take I-95 N, I-270 N, US-15 N, I-81 N, ... and US-20 E to W Columbus Ave in Springfield. Take exit 5B from I-91 S.

That route will add 100 miles, but will give a more relaxed drive.

Check out the darker blue line to see how it avoids the armpit of America... (If you've driven through the area you probably understand...)

Ditto. Going thru NJ/NY into CT, 3 options for bridges, Washington NONONONO. Tappan Zee, last time I used not too bad, but still ends up on 95 in CT, or the third option across Rt 84. A little further north. However, that longer route in the other reply is likely way better. When I needed these route I was heading to RI, so the extra distance would have been another day.

Thank you Domo! I think we will travel this route.

I don't know about you guys, but I found the NJTPK (95) to the GSP to the Mario Cuomo bridge the best way to get around the NYC traffic.. From that point you have a number of options to go north. Then take it from there.;)
Safe travels and all the best.

I take a different route: I-95 N, to I-26 in S. Carolina, to I-77 in Columbia, to I-81 then follow the recommendations above. This route avoids Richmond VA, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. The recommendations above avoid New York City from the end of mine. Mine you have to decide to go thru Charlotte or around on I-485 (traffic depending), and mountain climbs. Mine also avoids all tolls. I think the first tolls come near east side of PA. or whenever you leave I-81. This creen shot combines both recommendations, the Cuomo Bridge is an option.
