I found it tough to find access when we were there a couple of years ago, due to private land. Maybe our Montana locals can give you some hints.

Let me 'splain a few things.? MT owns the stream banks to some level.? Access to the streams is along the banks and you can walk them as long as you are below the high water marks even though the property immediately adjacent is privately owned.? There are state owned fishing access sites and also where ever a state, county etc., road crosses the river you can access on the road right of way.? Some land owners will try to stop you but it is in the regulation, or it was the last time I looked.

Some have even fenced off the banks.? Usually I cut the wire and go through.? I have met a few sheriff deputies that way but they have always backed me up.? And Yes, I do carry when fishing!!? There are bears in MT.? VBG

Thanks for that explanation Jim. I'll take you along to cut the wire next time I go  ;D

BTW when we were in the Lewistown area I was quite impressed with the fishing access points provided by the state. Good parking, toilet facilities and even paved or gravel trails along the stream.
