Forum Downtime - software update 3/24-27

I've never seen ads. I have a pretty good ad blocker.
I'm already a member of RV Life Pro, but with an entirely different email for that.
I'll wait to see how this all plays out.

If you are an RV LIFE Pro member under another address, we can consolidate those accounts (your choice). Hit the contact link for some help with that :)

Are there more adds now than B4? I am seeing many more that I used to, forcing me to use Brave when the adds get in the way of some things.

ok, so why is my username changed to "solarman1" from "solarman".. not cool admin
In the RV Life group of forums, there must be another member called Solarman. If it's you and you use a different email on that forum it can probably be changed. If that is the case scroll to the bottom of the page and use the "Contact Us" to get it checked out.

I do have the same name on the rv life forums with the exact same email address..
There is another "solarman" but with a different email address... you are not alone ;)

Display names are tied to email addresses and duplicates aren't allowed (software limit). We could change your display name to something else? I did a little digging and see that Solar Man (with a space) is available...

More ads is an understatement.
And they block forum content.

I was afraid this type of stuff would happen after they fix what is not broken.

Anyway, Brave takes care of the problem.

The ads are no longer tolerable on Edge in this forum.

Despite RVLife's pretext, it's all about the money. I'm not going to change browsers to avoid ads. I'm also not going to use a Forum with more ads than content or ads that block content. But I do have a question for those that understand the issue.

If everyone used a Brave or similar browser that eliminates ads, how would RVLife make money? It has to be a challenge. I'm waiting for the technology to advance to the point of the "sleepy driver software" I've read about in the past. They'll figure out a way to make people actually look at the ad before it ends. Not sure how they'll make them read or listen to it.:mad:

Solarman is now "Primerump"
as the new forum software is unable to provide me with my original name, I have decided to change my username, this new name is based on the fact that I like steaks and in particular, the primerump cut..

The answer is in moderation. I can tolerate adds quite well. Sometimes they are even useful. But there is a limit. They recently went past that limit when the ads were blocking content and there was no way to move them.

If we're forced to look at more ads, some people will probably quit those forums. It would be a great way to get rid of me.

Now, probably many are hoping for more adds that we are forced to look at here.:)

As is just about everything in our capitalistic country.

Simple: advertising pays the bills. I do understand that most online companies be it news sites, forums, etc. have to have some way to pay the bills and a certain number of discreet ads can work well. But some go WAY overboard with dozens of flashing, vibrating, ads splashed between every sentence almost along with dozens of "click bait" images ("You won't believe..." crap).

Not quite that bad here in that at least they don't have the click bait images.

I'm not going to change browsers to avoid ads. I'm also not going to use a Forum with more ads than content or ads that block content.
I have to wonder if the abundant, obnoxious, in-you-face ads some are seeing here are the product of this new system and that there might be a way to "tone it down" a bit somewhere in the software?

I don't see ads in Chrome with a blocker installed but... OMG, in phone & tablet? About the most annoying ads I've ever seen in any forum-- and I have dozens on my bookmark list.

So for phone and tablet I've installed the Brave browser, set the default home page to this forum, and only use it to access this forum. Problem solved without that much extra effort IMO.

They'll figure out a way to make people actually look at the ad ...
Pretty much there already what with ads now inserted into live events and strategic product placement in many shows & movies.

I get the economics of running a company. Been there done that. What I don't understand is why being in business is more about making money than providing a service. At some point there's a middle ground when a company can do both.

IMO, it would be better if you kept the name "solar" in there, as it shows your expertise here and is easy to remember. However, there is a cooking section here and if you're an expert on cooking steaks that could be helpful there.

Perhaps you should give @Tulecreeper a lesson that that, because by the time I am done with him, he will owe me a dozen steaks. :)

It's all Tom Jones' fault. He supported the RVForum as a labor of love out of his own pocket for 25+ years which kept ads to a minimum but may have made people here somewhat spoiled.

And thanks so very much to Tom, not just for "spoiling" us, but for keeping such a wonderful facility alive and friendly for so long.

I'm aware of that Lou. I also appreciate what Tom did, both in terms of his personal time invested and his expense which I assume was considerable. What I didn't understand is why he never asked for contributions.

Betty B did at several of the Forum Rallies I attended. I contributed both times Betty asked. But it didn't strike me as a logical approach to fund raising. I also sent a check directly to the Forum. Not a big deal but I expected at least an acknowledgement if not a thank you. Didn't receive either so wasn't sure the check even got through to the Forum.

Apologies if you didn't see it, but I always posted a public 'thanks' in the forum to folks who contributed via Betty.
