The good thing about "old school" lighter pug sockets was the entire case was negative and the center positive was a big piece of copper. If you wired it with 12 gauge you can run quite a lot through it.

That's why I cautioned the OP about upgrading the wire and fuse on his socket. It could be modern, Chinese, flimsy and have a trip wire like the one pictured above.
