... or, as they say in the Welsh language, dydd gwyl Dewi Hapus, omitting "sant", the Welsh word for saint.. A day when folks in/from the principality celebrate the death of David (Dewi in Welsh), a monk who lived in the sixth century. In addition to all his good deeds, he's famously known for the story of helping Welsh warriors distinguish themselves from the opposing Saxons; Seeing a nearby field of leeks, David suggested the Welsh wear a leak in their cap.
To this day, the leek is the national symbol, and is worn on the uniform of Welsh soldiers. Ceremoniously, on this day, Welsh soldiers line up and eat a whole raw leak. As boys, we 'wore' a leak to school on our jackets or sweaters, but the girls preferred to wear a daffodil; These flowers bloom on or around March 1st, both in Wales and here in California, and became an alternate symbol.
Wales is known as The Land Of Song, and I grew up hearing songs all around. In addition to the extensive singing in places of worship, there are countless male voice choirs; I recall that every village and town had a choir.
Pics are: The Welsh flag flying over our CA home, 3 of the grandsons wearing rugby jerseys (that was a loong time ago), and me with youngest son (taken the same day). Did I mention that rugby is the national sport, played at every school and in every village and town. The national team hasn't done so well the last few years.
