Well, I can't describe my rig for the simple reason that I don't actually have a rig yet. In fact, I've never had a RV rig. First time I've ever really thought about doing this. We've flown to places and stayed in hotels or driven to places and rented Airbnd. I looked into renting an RV once and it was so ridiculously expensive I thought, heck no. I've only towed once in my life, and if I had had to back up, I'd probably still be back there all jackknifed.
I'm a retired veteran (Army), age 58, my wife is 50, and we've got kids and grandkids. And I've have been planning on buying a new truck coming soon. Just because I really like the utility of trucks, being able to haul stuff both in the bed and on a trailer. So I just recently started researching about trucks. I had been planning on a 3/4 ton truck, because I've always thought 3/4 ton was a good compromise between "too small" and "too big."
Then my wife talked about how much fun it would be to do some camping. So I was looking at camper shells, the kind that have a bed over the cab and a bathroom, kitchen, etc. And I quickly discovered that you seriously needed a 1-ton truck to really have one of those. So I started looking for 1-ton trucks.
I actually started getting excited about the idea of getting a 1-ton truck.
Then my wife asked, "Can we take our grandchildren on our trips in a camper?" And it was like, no, not really. That would be really crowded.
So of course now I'm starting to look for an RV trailer. And I decided that to pull the trailer we'd maybe be better off with a diesel.
I got even more excited about the idea of getting a 1-ton diesel truck. That said, I've got a lot of questions: I've never owned a diesel before.
But I didn't want to lose my truck bed to a 5th wheel, so I was just looking at conventional travel trailers.
Then I learned that there are removable 5th wheels that you can easily remove/install in like two minutes. I didn't know that.
So now we're looking at both 5th wheel and conventional travel trailers. It's pretty exciting, because my wife has really got bit by the RV bug. She wants to just travel around, see the whole country, the more traveling the better.
It's really neat that we're both on the same page about this. Because, obviously, my wife can't blame me later. I mean, I hope she can't!
Anyway, we're not in a rush to buy. We're thinking maybe sometime this year or early next. My plan right now is to buy a new truck and after that pick up a used RV trailer. But neither one of those two things are set in stone: It could turn out to be the other way around! It depends on what we see and the deals we're offered. I want to look at things and learn about things and see a lot of both trucks and trailers before I pull any triggers and buy something I might regret later.
