Help me do a hit counter for my web site please

How do you do that?

Let me tell you where I'm starting from:

• I create the source in Word
• Save as web page
• Upload to my son's computer in Boston
• rename the top level page to index.html
• it works

I tried google & got all confused.

Alternatively, is there a good "html for complete idiots" on the web?

Try http://www.htmldog.com and http://www.w3schools.com for good places to start.  A Google search on html tutorial will turn up lots of additional references.
