Hole in battery

I added a new battery and after a few days on a decent charger the two batteries, one new one three years old, balanced out all six cells to the lower good level. Which is where they were before my stupidity. Happy Camper a couple more years or till the next thing. Thanks for the helpful replies!

The old battery likely dragged the new battery state of charge down. The only sure way to know is to measure electrolyte with a battery hygrometer. Specific gravity chart here:
