How many take a premium care plan for a residential fridge.

Weren’t they called ice boxes back then? You’d put a big block of ice in the top shelf and the cold air would fall down and cool everything in its path. 🤣😂😅
Actually, they looked like this. Monitor Top:whistling:

I’m talking about even before that when they were made out of wood. Google “antique ice box”.

I know what you were talking about. My grandmother actually used on of those into the early 50's. She came from the 'OLD' country and didn't like all the newfangled gadgets.
We had a local ICE man that delivered blocks of ice weekly. When he closed shop, she was forced to get an electric one.
I still remember that wooden box in her kitchen.

We had our current house built 11 years ago. We are on our second fridge, dishwasher and HAVAC unit. First fridge had the ice maker replaced at about 5 years. Repair guy said we were lucky to get that out of it. Then the mother board went out. We finally purchased a new one last year.
HAVAC quit cooling. Called a guy and he came out same day and said refrigerant was empty so big leak somewhere. He said he could find the leak and repair it but the refrigerant is expensive, about $2000 for 7.5lbs. He would guarantee his work for 12 months. We opted for a new unit. $14000 for a new Bosch with a 10 year factory warranty on parts and he warranted the labor for 10 years for $1000 ( included in the $14000).

If those appliances came with the house, it tells you that they installed the cheapest ones they could find.
Our current Fridge, dish washer and laundry equipment is pushing 20 years.
We replaced out old AC unit 4 years ago. The old one was installed in 1974 and the refrigerant was no longer available and it sounded like a 747 taking off.

Older appliances lasted longer. We have a refrigerator in our kitchen from the 80s which was in the house when we bought the house 10 years ago. I did replace the defrost timer a few years ago myself. I common problem and simply DIY fix. When I gut and remodel our upstairs kitchen, I’ll probably get a fancy new refrigerator. My experience lately with new appliances is not good. Even higher end ones. We have a basement one bedroom apartment that I gutted and redid the kitchen a few years ago for my son and daughter in law. I’ve had several problems with the refrigerator and the dishwasher. I usually don’t but I did get a geek squad warranty from Best Buy which has paid for itself several times over.

I think one problem with the new appliances is where they are made. Very few are actually made here.
And even then they are made with some foreign parts. Not any different than anything else we buy.

New appliances are not made to last very long. The parts are junk. They look nice and have all the gadgets. Do we really need water and ice on the outside of the door, etc... The only good thing is they use a lot less energy. My current refrig is 40 years old. I've heard several friend that tell me they have replaced their new refrig after 5 to 7 years. The new refrig I bought for the kitchen in the basement had a problem only after two years of use. I would might spending for high quality appliances but not sure new higher end appliance last any longer. We had an older subzero refrig in our previous house that was nice but don't feel like spending 10 to 15 K in this house. Not sure its worth it. I suppose this is a "first world problem".

And the more fancy gadgets make for more problems. As said, ice and water in the door, plus access to settings and temps using smartphone, really? Multiple plastic compartments on the door (cheap plastic that is prone to breaking).
One of the biggest problems in NOT cleaning the condenser coils, especially on the models that use a fan to cool the coils. The old external condensers really didn't have problems.

How about a computer monitor/tv on the door?

I have found from experience and in my trade that if something is not right or something breaks, it will do it within the first year. If it runs a year it will run a few more with no problem. That takes it past the add on warranty. So in most cases, that add on is not a good use of money. Except computers as Kirk mentioned.

While that's often true, it's not always so. We had a gorgeous french door Samsung that was trouble before we'd had it a year. After another 3 years we had to junk it because the compressor went out and a replacement only lasted less than a month (not to mention ice maker and more).

We've had our current LG door for fridge, door for freezer) for 6+ years now. All this vs a GE we bought in the mid-70s and kept until around 2008 or so.
