There seems to be a significant amount of interest in the economy and cost of living recently. Everything from the cost of eggs to the cost of a meal. But after we've covered the cost of eggs and the cost for a burger 70 years ago, the thread somehow morphs into a thread about how well we're doing. So I thought we should just cut to the chase. I'll start.

I'm doing OK.

Next.

Doing ok, just annoyed that lunch even from a fast food place is nearly $20 these days, and don't get me started on the price of a new car, etc.

Been married 50 years to a wonderful wife that enjoys (mostly) the same things I do. I have family and grandkids nearby. Still have my health, and live in my own home. Spend months every year traveling around the US in our RV. Financially secure enough to keep doing the things we want.

I consider myself wealthy.

Well, you already started it! :ROFLMAO: And since I am here . . . :D

New cars have many more features than do older cars. Stuff such as backup cameras and blind spot detection. Cars of today also last a lot longer, in most cases. The price vs. inflation should be a little more these days.

Use the car vs. inflation calculator here. It probably isn't as bad as it seems.

I think we will find most people here to be doing fine.

Even if one owns a junky RV, just to drive it a ways costs some bucks that poor people cannot afford.

I don't think we're the norm here.

Not a joke. Will move stuff back once things settle and hopefully i can buy into a low.
During the last few years where I worked, the stock markets were losing big every week and I was putting in more money than they were taking out each paycheck. That really bothered me so . . .

I thought I was being stupid when I changed all mine to zero risk, because it dropped so much already that I expected it to go back up. Boy, was I wr wro wron (I just cannot say it!) :ROFLMAO: .

Just after that it all went down BIG time. My "stupidly" saved me around 300K$, which was most of my savings at that time.

Proves luck beats skill! I need to admit I was extremely lucky there when I thought I was being stupid.

So good luck with whatever you do. It beats skill in many cases!

That's been my secret. I just keep getting different RV's. They require so much continual maintenance and upkeep, she can't afford to get rid of me!

How much are you worth?

In my case, it probably depends on who you ask. Since I am the one responding, I am worth and astronomical amount!

But in the real world, we are doing pretty well as my investment fund manager is really good at what he does and our monthly income still pays most of our bills. After 62 years of marriage, we are both fairly healthy but I do spend a fair amount of my time as a care giver. I figure that is probably repayment for all of the years that she kept me and our boys fed, supplied with clean clothes, and all of the things that she did for us. When I look at what we have today, compared to the humble background that both of us came from, we are doing very well. All three of our son's have college degrees and well above average incomes, and we have come to a point in life where we actually spend time figuring out what we wish to do with our excess income! We gave up the RV but we take cruises now instead. We have a paid off, long term care policy and have not needed to use it. We talk about spending down, but to date that has not happened. With the biggest decision we face being distribution of what we will leave behind, I'm thinking that we are going to make it!

EDIT: We just put a dozen eggs and a large steak on layaway!
