It seems like internet providers and some software developers feel their software should prevail above all others on one's computer, so their installation wizards seem to take over one's computer settings to the software company's self serving benefit.

In addition there are viruses, Trojans, spyware, pop ups, and email threats....how can someone who just wants to surf the net and peacefully operate a computer these days protect themselves amid all these threats?

If all you want to do is web surf, then run a bootable CD with Linux and Firefox.  Do a Googld search on Firefox Live for some sources.  The CD is read only so you can't possibly get any infections.  If you find yourself somewhere you don't want to be and can't get out, reboot.
