HWH Slide Out Only Extends With Ignition On

A member reported that an HWH slide motor sounded like it was trying to work, but the room would only extend when the ignition key was turned on. Several members pointed to low or inconsistent voltage at the slide motor, noting that turning on the ignition may add chassis battery support, and that many motorhomes benefit from having the engine running while operating slides.

The original poster said the coach previously worked without needing the ignition on and that the batteries are new...

I was taught that if you turn the headlights on for a few moments you get a few more amps to the starter.
I often wonder where such nonsense originates. Such lies can spread fast.

Turn the lights on and you then have LESS amps for the starter motor. Subtract the amps the lights draw and that is what you have left to run the starter. So lights off is best.

My gas motorcycles automatically turn off the lights when I press the starter button, even if they turn on with the ignition key. A couple of them keep the lights out until idle RPM is reached. They do this to get more power to the starter and ignition when starting.

You need a course in reading comprehension.

The statement was turn the headlights on for a few moments. I believe the theory was for very cold climates this warms the battery a bit.

I realize that you shill for the ev industry but perhaps not not all of us live in your little bubble (thankfully).

this warms the battery a bit.
IOW, is wasting more power to warm up the battery for nothing. Lead Acids do quite well in the cold.

The norm is for the lead acid battery to be able to start engines at -22°F /-30°C without being warmed up at all. And even then the lights on is only wasting power that can be used for starting the engine.

Called HWH and they said to turn the key on and that Winnebago must have wired the coach different ,but I will clean all connections Thanks for the help
Thanks for the followup, please keep this thread updated if you find a smoking gun when you clean the connections.

Sorry but I think you are the last person to comment on this issue.

How many times have you dealt with starting a vehicle in subzero weather?

Real experience, not cut and paste from the Internet.

The OP messaged me with the following good news:

Cleaned all connections that I thought were ok but I was wrong . The rooms go out without turning on the ignition key like you said.
