I-80 Nebraska Road Work and Closures This Summer

If you're planning East - West run on I-80 this summer, you need to know that Nebraska Highway Dept has big plans for I-80. Between the Wyoming Stateline and North Platte. Significant Closures will be involved.

Looks like the detour route is US 30 which runs parallel to much of I-80. I do not remember the west bound being particularly bad when I traveled it in September of 2022 when I traveled on I-80 from Ogallala to Lincoln.

Over the past 3 days, we drove the I-80 from I-35 in Iowa. to I-15 in Utah. I hope I never see that road again. Not only was there considerable road work but sustained strong winds. What surprised me were those sneaky grades. Didn't look like much but the old Vortec 8.1 RPMs were frequently between 4,000 and 4,500. Worse were those long stretches of head to head traffic. The only positive thing and the reason I went the northern route was the weather. The forcasts in the I-40 aeas were about 20º higher.

At its best, I-80 between Nebraska and Salt Lake City is a long day of dealing with too many trucks and too much wind, and too many people in a hurry to get down the road. But then, that defines just about every Interstate Highway in the country, now. But on I-80 the Weather can create an even more exciting adventure.

Half of my trip planning, these days is finding a route that does not include Interstate Highways.
