Hi Everyone -

My wife and I have been on the road since late April. After our next stop to visit Mt Rushmore (June 25-27) we start our trip back to Florida and while confirming some of our CG reservations, we found out that one of our stops, Rock Port RiversEdge CG (Rock Port, MO) is now closed for the season due to flooding. When I started Googling road closures due to flooding, much of the information seems out of date.

So my last stop, before heading South-East, is Salem, SD and then we head to Danville, MO (Lazy Day Campground), my route was I-29 South from I-90 (Sioux Falls, SD) to I-70 (Kansas City) and Rock Port, which is flooded, was the CG I was going to overnight at.

I am hoping some members who may be familiar with the I-29 road conditions (Flooding, closed exits, etc.) can give me some guidance as to the best route to take from Salem, SD to Danville, MO and a place to camp overnight that will avoid any flooded areas.

I did find a CG south of Rock Port at exit 53 off I-29 (AOK Campground and RV Park), but not sure if I should be avoiding I-29 all together.

Thanks in advance for any route and/or I-29 guidance you can offer me.

Russ

I can't answer directly but I Googled I-29 road conditions and saw a lot of references that could help you.  Each state generally has road conditions that you can check with phone numbers found at their web sites.

Stay safe on your homeward journey!

Many campgrounds are closed for a prolonged period due to damage from the Missouri River flooding. We also had two campgrounds cancel us for flooding along the Arkansas River in Kansas and Oklahoma. For current river conditions, check each state?s DOT website. It can change daily. Do campgrounds, look at the website. Like roads, conditions can change quickly.

Russ, a few days ago we detoured west of St Joseph into NE, due to I-29 closed north of St Joe for construction.  Google Maps now shows it open with side roads closed.  We stayed at the Victorian Acres RV Park, Nebraska City, but the highway 2 bridge from I-29 is closed.  We headed west...

Assuming I-29 is now open your only problem will likely be finding overnight stops.

Best check status or plan a different way to FL.

Good luck!

Safe travels!

Thank you everyone for your responses -

After looking at Missouri's DOT site relative to road closings do to flooding, I changed my route to take me further east on I-90. I will take 35 south to 18 and 218 and will overnight at a KOA in Waterloo, IA.

From Waterloo I'll take 380/218/61 to work my way south to I-70. Of course RT 61 takes me close to the Mississippi.  On Missouri's DOT site 61 appears to be open as it passes through the areas close to the Mississippi like Canton, MO area. Below Canton,  61 hits 24 and the Mississippi starts to move eastward, away from my route.

Hopefully my new route will be a better choice.

Thanks again for all your information.

I think you made a good choice. The Waterloo KOA isn?t bad. Too new for the trees to be helpful for shade, but they did plant quite a few. Nice place for the kids to play in the pond there too or ride a paddle boat. We live less than 10 miles away. If you get in early enough, send a PM or email for dinner recommendations or just to say hi.
