The very well trained AI that is used for imaging has been around for quite a few years. My mammograms have had this for years. But I would NOT want an AI program to diagnose without the concurrence of a board certified radiologist.

I am in a heavy ag state, and I haven’t see this. There has been a lot of just regular analysis to do this, again for many years.

I think AI in general is getting credit for a lot of just normal ordinary algorithmic analysis. The difference over the last few years is due more to increased computing power, just like it has for many years. I started when business computers were operating on a tens of thousands RAM bits and a few hundred thousands of ROM either on hard platters or even magnetic tape. And there really is no denying how terrible the AI data centers are on the environment. They use almost unbelievable amounts of energy, and the amount of water used for cooling makes them a major contributor to issues for human water use. My community turned down one recently when we unexpectedly found out a current small one was using 50% of the total output of our community owned electrical utility.

I really doubt scientists and engineers working with advanced AI tools "blindly accept ai guesses". Like any tool, in the hands of people that understand it's strengths and limitations, it can be an amazing asset.

At the same time, I think that concerns about what we might be in for in the long haul are well founded.
 
As an old fart and licensed professional engineer, I can go on for more time than anybody wants to invest on the concept of "Garbage in - Garbage out". I have no issue accepting AI as a tool but nobody can sue AI when something goes horrendously wrong. It comes down to the human in responsible charge to decide if the AI determination is appropriate. My experience in dealing with "the youngins" who insist that if that computer says it, it must be right, gives me great concern.

AI is not conventionally "stupid," but it lacks common sense, critical thinking, and true consciousness. It is essentially a sophisticated pattern-recognition machine. It can write complex computer code or summarize massive documents, yet it can easily fail at basic, everyday tasks (like figuring out if you should drive or walk to a car wash 50 meters away)
 
Just try not to upset the impatient driver. Just read about a guy who was shot with a stun gun by an angry impatient driver. Be smart, pull over, if at all possible, and let them pass..

Agree strongly. We've been gaining in analytic capability and the computing power to do it quickly & easily, and now we've coupled it with the ability to give directions to the computer in our "natural language", which itself thrives because of the ability to analyze free-style language in the computer and figure out what it means. What we really have is very fast imitation of intelligence.

In 1972 I was in the Army. I was assigned to a computer unit that had one computer. It filled an entire 30'x30' room and used punch-cards and packs of discs for storage.
That was the latest computer the army had at that time. Today, your cell phone has hundreds of times the computing power of that huge computer, AND no punch cards!!!
