We are looking for our next camper. Our current one does not have an island and we really like that layout with the relatively large open space (3 dogs). The campers both 5th wheel and TT that have other attributes we like seem to all have a large island. I'm wondering if the floor is continuous and the island cabinet is simply mounted on it with appropriate penetrations for water, drain, and electric. Assuming floor is present we're thinking about a custom island cabinet that is shorter with flip up panels for when additional counter space is desired.

thx to anyone taking the time to offer advice.

My guess would be there is flooring under an island. Installing floor around an island would require a certain amount of skill, and knowing rv construction workers, ‘skill’ is one of the things in life they don’t concern themselves with. I would check under any drawers, open cabinet doors, try and lift the ‘floor’ of any cabinet, etc.

Almost forgot. Our island has the heater registers built into the kick plate so look for that to see if you will have to worry about ducts. I dont think many rvs do that though. And even though ours didnt come with a dishwasher they installed an outlet and electrical wiring behind the inside back panel. Wouldnt have known it was there if we didnt have to fix one of the shelves.

Ours has a floor under the island with holes for the water, drain and electrical. Actually it's about a 5" hole and everything is run up through it.

It would help us answer your question if you put the year, make and model of your RV into the signature line. That way we can tell if it is the same manufacturer as ours and approximately the same year.

For example, I visited the Fleetwood factory way back in 2011, and they put a layer of 3/4 plywood directly on the bare chassis before they added anything else.

Have someone pull out a drawer in the island and take pictures. If there is a power outlet/water/heat in the island there will be holes through the floor and subfloor.

And there will be screw holes in the floor holding the island in place. Installing a smaller island may show these holes.

I had to laugh when I read your post.

And of course.. You are correct .. I fully agree.
Quadruple down (Double twice) after some of the horror stories I've read about RV construction (right here in these forums)

Like the carpenter who used screws long enough to penetrate the wood he was securing.. the wood he was securing it to.. and the black tank below that.

I dont think skill is the right term but it takes an awful lot of something to find a way to use this many scre Screenshot_20220807-113124_Gallery.jpgws on a slide bracket

Why in the first place would anyone with walking around sense build the floor around the island?

thx everyone. I expected the answer to be the floor was continuous but have learned to assume nothing when it comes to RV construction.
