According to Neil deGrasse...
  • Each of those dots you see is a GALAXY...
  • And each GALAXY has roughly 100BILLION STARS.
  • Also, each STAR has at least 1 PLANET.
  • Now how many galaxies do you think there can be in that picture?
  • And this is just a photograph of a very little parcel of the universe.

There are people in that pic that are taking pics of us and saying the same thing. Or maybe they already know.

Interesting for me is how a far off star's number and proximity of planets is determined. They then try to zero in on the planets within a star's habitable zone, that is, in the zone around the star where conditions on a planet might be conducive to sustaining life and fit within the parameters of the Drake Equation.
The 1977 "Wow" ( 6EQUJ5) signal intercepted by the radio telescope at Ohio State was arguably generated from somewhere out there.

Unfortunately, we are not to morph these discussions into religious discussions, but in my case .... every time I look up at the stars, my faith is enriched! I'll not go any farther!
Fortunately, as far as I’m concerned.

The closest star system outside our own is Centauri, composed of three known stars. 2 are in a binary configuration and the other, Proxima Centauri, the closest at under 5 light years, is not visible to the naked eye, unlike Alpha and Beta which we can see unaided.
If Voyager were oriented toward Proxima it would arrive in 70,000 years.

Yes, there are more stars, perhaps more galaxies, than most people can count, but the above statement cannot be proved- it's not possible for them to determine for each star that is in existance whether that individual has a planet, except for SOME stars they can actually see well enough to make a specific determination. And I'm sure there are plenty of stars they cannot see, even with the James Webb 'scope.

So yes, many, many stars, perhaps all that they've spotted so far with the ability to determine specific details have had planets, but that doesn't quite allow the interpolation implied in the statement. In fact I don't think they've done detail checking yet on all the stars that they can see- countless billions+.

The fastest however are the Navigator Guild, they can fold space. It costs a lot of spice though.
Something I've never heard explained is what happens to the stars and planets along the fold. Imagine if our constellations radically changed every time a spacecraft cruised by our part of the universe.

In heuristics, if all the stars you've been able to chart have at least one planet, you may assume, but you don't know, all stars likely have at least one planet in their gravitational system.
As in I can't prove that all people would prefer an ice cream sandwich to being repeatedly slapped in the mouth, but I'd err to the ice cream sandwich.

I think it has something to do with the space-time continuum, so it's kinda metaphysical.

It's at least a bazillion, maybe even a cotillion.

This kinda make one feel insignificant; well really we are. My buddy knocked a mans ego away one day.
The guy acted as though he was the most important man on earth. My buddy, nickname Bump, once told him to wait a moment. Bump went and got a pail of water, sat it in front of the man, then told him to use his hand to splash water in the bucket. The man did, Bump told him to remove his hand and said_ that's you on this earth. When the water settled down and was smooth Bump told the man_ this is the earth without you, that's how important you are to the rest of society.
It changed the mans entire demeanor.

The poem of the Indispensible Man..

Maybe we are looking at these all wrong. Remember the 1990's Magic Eye photos? Those photos remind me of them. Maybe if we stare at the pictures long enough we'll see a really important hidden picture. Like a dinosaur eating a banana? Who's to say the universe doesn't have a sense of humor?
