>> Well Bob, my perspective was from living there for 8 years and with my wife working in one of the casinos. I know several of the security folks and they say that the LA gangs have become a problem the last 2 years...after the Harrah's shootings. Crime is up, but not advertised.

Thanks for prefacing with, "They say . . .", Woodartist. Would image if one hangs with a security guard or local cop -- they would "hear" all kinda stuff. I would  be more interested in how many LA gang members have you personally run into during your stay there.  ??? :) I've been hanging out in Laughlin for about 10 years now -- and have never encountered an LA gang member. Strange.

Am not saying crime does not exists -- am just saying as a visitor to Laughlin, I have never been been threatened by what you have "heard" about. Nor has my brother and his family and the many others that I know personally that visit and enjoy Laughlin.  If I made it a point to either talk to or chat with someone else that has talked to a local security or law enforcement person as a prerequisite for a visit, am afraid I would not be traveling very much. Actually, I would have even leave my current location.  And I for sure wouldn't go to San Francisco any more. Or to Scoma's in Sausalito for sea food. We're talking major sin and crime . . . for sure.

>> Room rates are ridiculous and Harrah's was charging $175 to park in their lot. Competive events are now held in Kingman, Vegas, and Havesu. I do agree that almost all the bikers I have met were good folks. In fact made several friends that way. They also tip well :)
====
Rates charged most anywhere are based on what can be had. Events such as Hot August Nights in Reno cause RV nightly rates to triple -- at least. I can't blame them. At those rates, every site in most every park is taken. That's the way our economy works. Have you ever noticed the RV lot at Harrah's' in Laughin in July and August. Do you have any sympathy for the fact they are empty? Laughlin is a Winter place -- and they have to make enough during their season to offset the long hot summer. I'm glad Harrah's is there -- and I hope they stay and make enough "to" stay. If they leave, they will take the best buffet desert bar with them -- and that "would" be a shame. :(

>> Laughlin became a magnet for Rver's and they are to blame for the dry camping ban. Motorhomes were dumping black waste into the trash cans Ramada) and the maintenance people got tired of it. Heck, even some of the RVer's used soap in the hot tub....for which they didn't pay. Also they would use showers after hours at the River Palms, and dump waste above Harrah's. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Rver also, but it only takes a few to spoil things for the others.

Where you aware that this is true most everywhere?

>> I don't want to keep dwelling on the problems of Bullhead/Laughllin but it isn't what it used to be.... My wife tells horror stories as well. Meth labs in the hotels, stabbings, etc.
>> Bullhead has a major problem and crime is rising. The cost of basic housing is about 5 times what it was a few years ago. The infra structure is stretched and they still haven't decided on a new bridge location yet ( Nevada's fault). The RV parks are not that great. We know of folks in the Mirage and the Bullhead park and of course there was the big drug raid last year.
>>They keep good PR and the casinos don't let much bad news out. But if you take a close look, things are not what they were and the S. California problems are flooding in.

Wow!!! What a cesspool of sin and degradation.    Are the things your wife tells you things that she has encountered, or just heard about. Again, until you or anyone else relates to me what they have personally encountered, I will continue to visit and enjoy Laughlin -- and meet up with other family members and friends that also enjoy the area.

Bob,

PMFJI, but I didn't realize there was a Scoma's in Sausalito. I've been to the one at Fisherman's Wharf and it's first class. Good food and more than you (I) can eat. I'll check out the one in Sausalito next time we have visitors and we're playing tour guides.

While working my way through my divorce in the mid seventies, I lived at the Embrocadero Center at the foot of Washington on the 11th floor, with a bay view, for $290/month. Could walk to the Wharf for dinner and caught a cable car to work each day. That little one bedroom apartment now costs thousands to rent. :(? Anyway, even before that, Scomas on the Wharf was always my favorite.

Then I discovered Scomas in Sausalito. It's not as big -- but the seafood and cooks are the same. And from the attached pics I took on my last trip to the City (about a year ago) you can see that the atmosphere is as good as one would find on any water front in the world. Yes -- do take your friends there. I always go all the way down the main drag to the public parking lot near the bay commute terminal and enjoy the walk back through downtown. As you wind down the hill into town from the GG bridge, you will see Scomas sitting there on the bay.

Bob,

This is definitely a HFWPOH for me. I've passed that restaurant many times, not realizing it was Scomas.

I figured you "must" have at least seen the building -- hard to miss it there. It's been Scomas I think since about the mid sixties. At least back then, the fellow that owned Ernie's in the City had part interest in it. Check out their web site:

Definitely a distinctive building Bob. Thanks for the link.

Well Bob, you must like the town and that is fine. Yes, I personally know of people affected by the "air" in Laughlin, including me. I've had things stolen from my truck parked in Harrah's, saw other crimes committed...blah, blah, blah :) Neighbors have been threatened, folks beaten, and yes, gun shots. Road blocks and helicopters over head. I was there when the killings happened at Harrah's and sure read enough about them in the papers. What I know about is not hear say, and just go to the town branch of metro to see the effects and read the posters. The meth lab fires are well known and I've seen them. A good friend of mine is head of security at one of the casinos, I know folks at Metro, and I don't doubt their credability, nor my wife who sees the stuff on a daily basis.  Murder at the Riverside for one example. I know first hand about the problems at the Ramada and at other Casinos. I have seen people dumping and have reported them. Denial is fine, but reality is better :) Anyway, enjoy yourself in Nevada's paradise and this is the last post I'm going to make on this subject. Maybe we have lived there too long and are blind? Talk to Metro:)

Peace my friend and enjoy yourself......

Sorry -- you misunderstand my point, Woodartist.? I didn't deny this kinda stuff happens. Of course it does. The point is that what you describe goes on in just about every major "nice" spot in the US. Every city I go to has all the stuff you warn folk against in Laughlin -- such as San Francisco, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and on and on.? However, the way you post here, anyone would think it's a hell hole of murder, drugs, meth labs and so forth that should be avoided. What you describe is just not going to happen to Mr. and Mrs. RVer going to Laughlin to enjoy the River, Restaurants, Shows, Gaming, Neat Events -- and especially other great RVers.

And while running Laughlin down, you recommend towns like Pahrump. I find that amazing. Note this quote:

Quote:
Granted, Pahrump and her legal brothels have always been known as Las Vegas' whorehouse, but ladies of the night are not the only vice Pahrump supplies to Clark County denizens. Pahrump is the place you come to buy crystal meth straight from the factory. It seems every wannabe alchemist with a beaker and a hot plate has set up shop on one of the thousands of lots in the valley that range in size from 1 1/4 to 10 acres.

The wide-open spaces that bucolic Pahrump offers to decent folks looking for a little elbow room also attract meth cooks. The caustic smell produced when the poison is made is more difficult to detect here than it would be in the tightly packed, cookie-cutter subdivisions of Las Vegas.

Clandestine methamphetamine labs have sprung up in rural towns throughout the West over the past decade, and nowhere is this problem more evident than in Pahrump, where speed freaks have laid siege to cops and courts. In 2002, the sheriff's SCORPION task force, a team of hard-boiled undercover narcs, busted 31 clandestine labs in Pahrump, more than four times the number discovered in all of Clark County that year, according to state statistics. More than 85 percent of criminal prosecutions in Nye County over the past seven years have involved defendants who made, sold or used meth. The crimes the hundreds of defendants have been charged with range from murder and rape to kidnapping and armed robbery, but the root cause of their troubles is a nasty meth habit.
Unquote:

This came from an Article in a Las Vegas new paper. It goes on the describe the vicious murders committed by prostitutes, illegal immigrants, and dopers such as burning people alive in autos. Thats' the "reality" of Pahrump . . . as described in this article or many others that are very easy to find.

>> Anyway, enjoy yourself in Nevada's paradise and this is the last post I'm going to make on this subject. Maybe we have lived there too long and are blind? Talk to Metro:) Peace my friend and enjoy yourself.......

Yes, we have bantered a bit.? :)? Sorry about that -- but If you post such message about a location that some others are very fond of, you can probably expect to be countered on the subject.

And peace to you, Woodartist . . .

Gee, sounds like home to me (I'm in Detroit)

Heck John  Taht could go for St Louis, Phoenix and a whole bunch more of town across the nation.

Leilani

Back to the original subject ;D

Terribles Lakeside RV Park in Pahrump is one of the best in the country and is only about $13 for a limited number of nites with Passport America. Don't know if they do extended stay. Decent restaurant and casino on site.
