Las Vegas Stay 2 - 4 nights

The Sams town park on Boulder Hwy & Flamingo has nice wide spaces.  It's an easy park to get around in, and there's a Walmart right across the street that had a couple of Boondockers.  I was there for a few days and walked over to the Walmart, and the same units were there my entire stay.  And there were plenty more spaces available in the park.  The rate when I was there was only $22 a night, for full hook ups! 
 
I am at the Road Runner RV park right now just a block or so north of Sams Town. The rates here are slightly cheaper. It is a very nice park with a great pool and really clean showers. Both places are about 5 miles from the strip which can be a blessing or a curse depending on your viewpoint. It is very quiet here at night. And the lady Cookie who works in the office makes this whole place worth while. She is cute.
 
We will be heading through Vegas around Dec 2nd/3rd.  Was planning on getting just north of town, but haven't checked for cg's yet.  We will be in our Westy, heading back to Yellowstone.
 
We also like Sam's Town. Used to stay there for $5 back in the 80s. On our last trip to Vegas, we stayed at the Elks Lodge in North Las Vegas....nothing fancy but cheap if you're an Elk. Main Street Station is cheap, handy to Downtown, and very, very, very noisy (adjacent to main fire station and freeway). KOA is on the strip but it's expensive and not much more than a parking lot.

Bill - If I was passing thru Vegas in our Westie, I'd stay out at Lake Mead. Several nice campgrounds around the lake.

Wendy, I'll have to check, when on a tight schedule as we will be, I don't detour too much.
I am planning on a detour to see the dam though.

@Bill - Yep, Lake Mead NRA. Gas up in Henderson and take the scenic road around the lake. Pick a campground, there are 4 or 5 around the lake, stay overnight, enjoy the quiet and the coyotes, then keep going to Overton. Come out on I-15, which is where I assume you wanted to be anyway. Only this way, you skip Vegas, which, to my way of thinking, is a good thing :)

If you stay at Sams Town they have a free shuttle to the strip as well as Freemont St Experience.  Don't miss Red Rock and Valley of Fire while you're out there.  Red Rock Canyon is the closest; go west on Flamingo to I-15, go south to Blue Diamond (at the Silverton & Bass Pro shops exit) turn right (west) several miles out you will see the sign, turn right.  They charged me a couple of bucks, don't remember how much, that's how low the admission  was, they have a gift shop and lots of great hikes and views to experience.

Also, on your way back, as you're going east from I-15 on Flamingo, just past the Bally is Koval St., as soon as you turn right there, you'll take a left between Ellis Island and the Super 8.  Ellis Island has a steak special for $7.99; Soup or Salad, 20 Micro brewed beer or Root Beer, Steak, potato, green beens and rolls with real butter.  Best Dinner deal in Vegas.  It's not on the menu, just ask for the steak special.

Another great place to eat, albeit much more expensive, is the Seafood buffet at the Rio.  Last time I was there it was $49.95, all you can eat seafood, several types of Crab legs, Lobster, Sushi, and about any type of seafood you could want; not to mention the deserts.  The buffet at the M, the Cosmopolitan, and the Bellagio are also very good.  Enjoy! 

For about $500 each, you can take the Sundance Helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon.  The one that stops at the bottom of the canyon and has a Champagne brunch is fun.  You get to walk around at the bottom of the Canyon where they serve you a champagne brunch!  Knowing that you won't have to walk back up to the top is Priceless!  When you book it, ask for the "quiet helicopter with the big windows."  I'm not sure what the name of that copter is, but it's a much more expensive helicopter because of the rear rotor being enclosed and the larger windows to see out of.  You also fly over the Hover Dam on the way out to the Canyon.
 
If you say you wish to stay 'NORTH' of Las Vegas, yet see Hoover Dam, that's a looonnnggg drive (probably 90 minutes or more). About an hour or more NORTH you could try Valley of Fire State Park...great place to park with hook ups, but weekends get busy. It is not really convenient to coming back into Las Vegas. West side of Las Vegas is BLM site specific campground (no hookups) which is open in the fall through spring. West on Charleston at the 215 Beltway towards Red Rock (can't see the rocks from campground and lots of bicycle riders stay here and ride up to Red Rock)... If you want to see Hoover Dam, try Lake Mead camping or Boulder City (use RV park reviews or other) as these areas are so much closer to the dam. If you want to try the other suggestions by others, they're all fine for your needs. Also, South on Las Vegas Boulevard at Windmill (about 5-6 miles from center strip) would be Las Vegas Oasis RV (nice but pricey) Ez access off I-15. If you don't want to drive your rig in the (IMHO) lousy traffic of the casino corridors stay outside and toad/taxi/bus it to see the sights.

Its off 159 at the north end - past Red Rocks and a little past Calico Basin Rd if you are coming from the south (Rte 160, Blue Diamond)

I think it would be easier to take the I-215 west/north and exit at Charleston Blvd. Head west.

The campground is on Moenkopi Rd. It is a dry campground - actually I think water is available, but no dump station. $15.00/night, but you should get 50% off.

Just not a place to be when its HOT.

Thanks Ken. With your fine directions,  I found the area on the map. For some reason, we've never explored that area. We'll have to correct that next time we are in the area. And that won't be when it's hot, although, having lived in Death Valley, our definition of "hot" is a little different from many other folks.

I have lived in Vegas for 14 years and new to the RV'ing world but have done my homework...

The 'Oasis' [although we haven't stayed there yet] gets great reviews.  Close to 'The Strip' and free shuttle to the Silverton Casino and Bass Pro Shops which are both across the street from the Oasis...

Sam's Town Casino & RV Park is the BEST place to stay on Boulder Hwy.  Closer to the Walmart and other retail shops and fast food restaurants.  Plus, S.T. has a great security department w/marked vehicle & bike patrols throughout the RV park, 24/7...  I know, I worked there.  S.T. is in a safer area on Boulder Hwy. than the other RV parks on Boulder...

The RV'er's @ S.T. are more the long term guest and will be more than happy to give you any advice on the area.

Bill, I agree.  I saw many parked across the street at the WM, but to me, $22 a night is a small price to pay for security.  I slept well, and didn't have to worry about my unit while I was gone.  Everyone there is so nice and helpful, I really enjoyed my stay. 

The only change I'd like them to make, is run the shuttle to Freemont street until 02:00.  I think the last PU from Freemont st was 20:00, and they didn't turn the light show on until about 18:30, then the band starts playing, etc..  Even with a toad, I prefer the shuttle as there is limited parking down there where I feel safe to leave it.
 
Setting up our timeline for our trip south, now looks like we will be in Vegas for new years.
Still not sure if we will stay at the Oasis or Sam's Town.  We are leaning to Sam's.
Planning on spending a week now, so we will have extra time.
Any suggestions?  Also what to do on New Years, we figure they must be some good stuff going on.
Thanks for all the past sugestions, and looking forward to new ideas.
PS will be looking for help as we get closer to Quartsite, want to boondock for a week or so.

I've worked on the 'Strip' on N.Y.E. and it's a nightmare...  'Amature Drunk Night.'

First of all, most of the midsection of the Strip [Las Vegas Blvd.] will be closed to motor vehicle traffic.  The crowd normally gets pretty unruly and one year (about '99) people were tipping over cars and knocking down statues in front of Caesar's Palace...

When you're in Vegas pick up the 'What's On' magazine and that will give you ALL the activity going on at each of the Vegas casinos...

On the Sam's Town side of the area, S.T. will be festive and the new Cannery East Casino will have something going on for N.Y.E. just adjacent to S.T. and a very nice casino...  Great observation deck & club on top of their hotel.

The Freemont Street Experience, downtown, will get crazy too and may charge to get in the gates.

My best advice is to stick to a local's casino and away from the Strip and remember, "The locals play where the locals win."  ;D ;D
