Bob!

that is a fantastic web page.  Even has George Strait featured, though his song did not load for me.  I sing most of his songs in karaoke and have a huge collection of his recordings.

Now I am all hepped up and wanting to go to Pismo.

How many hours do you think it would be from Phoenix?  Does it ever get overcrowded?  I ask that because $12 for a beach view seems like a very hot deal!

I can drink to your observation!  In fact, that is why I have plenty of beer on hand.  Helps control the fatigue and adds some bult to the belly!  ;D

Smoky

What are Bal'imor steamed crabs without a pitcher of beer? :D

Glad you liked the page, Smoky. Not sure of why the music will not play -- perhaps its your browser. I use IE -- and others have reported success with other browsers as well.

Pismo is probably about 550 miles or so from Phoenix -- if you drove straight thru LA, then over to the coast off of the 5 on 126 thru Filmore to Ventura. So it's an easy two day drive. My preferred route as mentioned is to bypass LA and do 138 across to the 14. Rather than taking 138 all the way thru Palmdale, I miss the traffic and cut off on the Pearblossom highway to 14.

I've been going to Pismo in my RV for about 10 years now off and on -- but only in the Winter months. As such, I have never made a reservation and have never found the State Park over half full. If I'm lucky, I get one of the sites just over the dunes from the beach -- but they are rarely available. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. They also have a campground host that sells firewood -- plus public showers, dump, and fresh water stations.

The beach area South of Pismo is Grover Beach -- and that is where you will find Horses, ATV's, and RV's right on the beach. A real shame that they allow that on those beautiful beaches. Fortunately, Pismo is very strict about their beaches. BTW, the little black dots on the last sunset picture on the page are surfers -- if you hadn't figured that out. Pismo is a haven for the local surfing community. In the summer months -- it would be a zoo finding a place to park or whatever, tho you can make reservations on line for up to a two week stay.

Bob  Got to apoligize to you, for some reason I missed this thread and now that I've found it  I must agree with Smoky  FANTASTIC

Bernie:

You are right about the beer.  Though I recently discovered plain old Coca cola goes great with them also.

Bob:

Is there a Pismo web site I can go to?  What is the weather like in the winter?  I am thinking of taking the Admiral there and not tell her where we are going.  Make it a surprise.  She has always wanted to stay somewhere where she can at least see the beach.

Would Indio be a good midway point?  She loves staying overnight at the Casino there.

Shhh Shayne, don't tell her.

Smoky,

Try http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=595 or do a google search for Pismo State Beach.

Smoky  That Lady believes everything you say.  She';; think she's at the beach in Jan at the Q if you tell her so.

This site is referenced under the Monarchs picture on my web page. Note the drop down menu items at the top of the page -- and the slide shows and panoramas at the bottom of the page. Gives a pretty good cross section of what is available.

And this site points to the North Beach State Campground where I always stay. There is another State Park campground in Oceano -- which is just South of Pismo. They actually have some full hook up sites -- but it is not as close to the beach and not as nice as the boon docking only State Park in Pismo (the North Beach Campground).

The weather in the Winter along the Beaches North of LA can get a variety of stuff. Some days may be shirt sleeve weather, whereas others may have you bundled up. It is "not" swimming weather unless you are a surfer wearing rubber from head to toe. :)  The only "bad" weather I have seen there is when the Pineapple Express rain pattern happens to hit. Then you get those consistent rains that can make it less than a fun time. So I would watch the forecasts and see how it goes. In ten years of winter visits, I have only hit rain one time. Note the blue skies in the pictures I posted. On those kinda days, you can walk for hours on the beach -- and even go barefoot in the surf. I love it there . . .

The half way point would be more like Banning or Beaumont vs. Indio -- but not by that much. Also, the second half will probably go slower than the first half -- as you will be coming over to Ventura, the up the coast to Pismo. Also, I believe on the web page I point to above, you will see spots such as Salvang (the super neat Danish Community -- did you see the movie, Sideways?) that is a great visit, or perhaps you may want to stop in Santa Barbara -- or at one of the many Valencia and Navel orange orchards West of Filmore on 126. So getting farther on the 1st day, to me, would be a better plan.

Thanks Bob.  I am really getting excited about the possibilities of this trip.  If we luck out and get a spot on the beach, are there any special things to keep in mind about driving on the sand?

I do.  Do not try to cross the creek at high tide.  In fact you are better off tracking some other poor fool if and when you do ford it.  Remember that is salt water.  Get your undercarriage washed with fresh water, asap.

Oops .. seems I've mislead you. The sites in the North Beach Campground are not "on" the beach. There are sand dunes between the row of sites closest to the beach and the beach itself. The camper must walk over the dunes to get to the beach. Of course, we are talking only 30-40 yards, max. From some sites, the camper can actually see the ocean around the end of that stretch of dunes. There is "no" driving on the beaches at Pismo.

However, just south of Pismo is Grover Beach. They "do" allow driving on the beaches there -- be it an RV, an ATV, or a horse. I ride down there on my bike to the Grover Beach entrance. You drive West up to the ranger station, pay your fee, and drive right onto the beach. I would never drive my Jeep or Rig onto the beach myself. It is salt water and every day many get stuck -- it ain't Daytona. :) You can also rent ATV's in and around Grover Beach.

So that's the nice part about the section of San Luis Obispo beaches. Pismo is a quiet and peaceful place to camp and enjoy the beach -- whereas a few miles South you have the finest remaining dunes of the Pacific coast for driving recreation if so desired.

... hmmmm.... anyone have a good idea for how to wash the underside?

Hook a sprayer to a hose and crawl under the motorhome in your swimsuit??

Easy.  Find a car wash that has an undercarriage washer.  IIRC there is one near the entrance to the beach.
