Lottery mystery

"Well, someone has to win!"
I think the odds are probably better of being killed in an accident on the way to buy the lotto ticket than the odds of the big win.

FWIW, many people in Reno go to CA to buy a CA lotto ticket.

NV has all types of legal gambling but not the lotto.

Yes, I understand that Caesar's Sports Book will calculate odds on anything you want. Even if you come to them with a one off bet. The betting odds for the next pope varied, but Pietro Parolin was a favorite with odds ranging from 26% to 40%. However, the actual outcome Robert Francis Prevost, had odds close to 50/15. Unfortunately, based on an inside tip I had Fr. Guido Sarducci at 10mil/1. Didn't pay off.

That is sort of like going to the Casino parking lots here in SW Louisiana, 90%+ of the cars have Texas license plates, the last I checked there is only 1 small Indian Casino in the entire state of Texas about 90 miles from where I live in Louisiana (update there are now 2 more one in El Paso, and one in Eagle Pass down on the Mexican border) , and it was just built a few years ago due to the tribe winning a federal lawsuit that went to the Supreme court in 2022 that said Texas can't regulate what happens on Indian Reservations, to allow them to build. Though there is a big push to legalize Casinos in Texas going on this spring, I don't know if it has came up for a vote yet.

But would a billon bucks change your life? I don't think it would change anything with my life.

Many people think more is better and with no limit. That explains why the lotto lines are longer when the numbers are larger.

And it's not just with money. Can a motorcycle be fast enough for some people? Loud enough (imagine if there were no laws on this). Can junk "music" be loud enough for some?

Probably not in any meaningful way, but traveling by private jet and skipping the lines for TSA, and the sardine can packing on airliners might be nice, of course I have not set foot on a plane since 2016, as I did way too much of that before I retired. Though as much as I gripe about it, and tend to be rather frugal, at the end of the day you, and I are financially stable, and much better off than the vast majority of people, I make more than the individual median income in my town in investment dividend returns alone, combined with my wife's salary our annual income is around double the local median statistic, and that does not count unrealized long term land ownership investment, etc.

Texas is talking about ending the State Lottery. Organized crime has won two large pots by buying all the possible combinations of numbers in an online scheme. Online lottery ticket sales have been taken down.
As for Casinos, we have a push every other year or so to legalize casinos here. It's a ballot issue, so far they haven't succeeded, but they get closer each time.

I hope they continue to fail to pass it, our local economy here in west Louisiana really benefits from the Texas gambling tourist, they spend money not only at the Casinos, but also local hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc. Then of course there is the local government revenue from all the Texas drivers doing 70+ mph in our 55 mph speed zones.-

So far the moneyed interests here haven't succeeded in convincing the voters. In N. Texas they go to Choctaw Casino up in Durant, OK. My guess is they'll convince the Governor to somehow maneuver from a referendum to an act of the legislature and then it will only be a matter of funneling money into the pockets of politicians.

Probably, but until then I will enjoy the fringe benefits, such as the tourist allowing a more diverse set of restaurants to operate than the local economy could otherwise support, etc.

Even though it is only temporary lottery tickets are the only hope some people have.

Government spent years prosecuting the mafia to end the numbers racket just to implement their own version of it. Marijuana is being legalized to increase tax collection. What's next? Prostitution? Oh wait, Nevada did that a long time ago.

Prostitution has been legal in many european countries for ages. Like the decriminalization of alcohol and marijuana life seems to go on.

When I was in working world and the lottery would get way up, there was always a pool to get into, 20-30 employees all put in say $5 for a pool of tickets. I basically never play the lottery, but I would allways get in on the pool. I did not want to be interviewed as the only empolyee to have to go to work after the pool won.

My go to saying is the lottery is a tax on those bad at math.

For Nevada, it goes by county:

Same thing in AZ. A few businesses have gotten together and bought a million tickets a number of times and have won big. There is a bill before the legislature to stop that practice.
