My dad really liked Mitch Miller. He and Mom also loved the Old Big Band orchestras - Dorsey, Miller, Goodman, Basie, and the like. I grew with all of that, and still have many of their old 78s. Don't play them, anymore. Have them all transferred to Digital and CDs.
You're right of course, I was thinking about singing ability. High music volume can conceal a weak voice. Hard rock bands come to mind.
My list of favorites starts with Tommy James and the Shondells, The Supremes, Jan and Dean, Beach Boys, Elton John and goes thru the Beatles, Stones. Lovin Spoonful, Lynrd Skinnrd, Led Zepplin, Cream, Traffic, The Who, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane thru Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Heart, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi etc.
