My son gave me out of his 2007 Beaver his Magnum ME 2012 Inverter charger. He upgraded to a solar system. I have a 2004 Gulfstream Cresendo, that we realy like. Only 65,000 miles so far. Was thing about installing the unit. I also have the inside pannel with the unit. Is it worth the trouble or sould I just sell the unit. We do some dry camping 4 to 5 times a year.  Just looking for some advice.

Two thoughts immediately pop into my head;
  • First - Why would your son remove the ME2012 just because he added solar?  It seems to me that he could have very successfully integrated it into his configuration.  What is he now using for a converter/battery charger when plugged to shore power and without sufficient sunshine?
  • Second - What model Converter do you currently have in your Gulfstream?
If you have a good 3-stage charger/converter, I would consider a standalone inverter, if you feel you really want one, and sell the ME2012.

If, on the other hand, your current converter is NOT a quality charger, than the combined charger/inverter functions of the ME2012 would be an upgrade to your unit.

Just my thoughts on the subject.  lou

If you do not currently have an inverter it is a great convenience while traveling or boondocking. The change in wiring can be fairly substantial if your coach doesn't have 120v circuits readily available.

My sons new solar system... I do not know what he has but he did stay on Cornodo Islanc Ca for training and Boondocked for 3 weeks and newver turned on the genorator with his new system.He is in Afganistan now but I will ask the question on his return

Thankc for the thoughts.

As mentioned above, it makes no sense that he removed the Magnum, boondocking or not. Did he do this on his own or on advice from someone else? I have a Magnum 2012 along with 400W of solar, boondock 99% of the time, and use both. One does not negate the other.

The Magnum inverter/chargers are supposed to be fantastic units to the point where a Magnum fanboi encouraged me to buy one just to use as a charger even though I didn't need inverter capabilities.

If you're going to use the inverter feature you may end up needing extensive wiring changes depending on your needs and how you rig is set up now, though, so it's not a free upgrade.
