My partner, Bonnie, has been dealing with terminal leukemia for the last year. I gladly provided care giving and we continued to have a great relationship in spite of her health issues. For the past few months, she had accepted her limitations and was quite happy. She had a sparkling personality and enjoyed going for treatments at the Massey Cancer Center because she made so many friends with the nurses and other staff. She suffered a health trauma on Monday that was so severe there was no hope of recovery. In consultation with family and friends, I followed her advance wishes and authorized removal of her life support. She passed away peacefully surrounded by some of her many friends and family. As an example of her sparkling personality, today I met with many of the nurses and other staff at the cancer center to let them know she passed away and how much she loved them. There were a lot of tears and hugs. So many of them had become very close to her. As for myself, I'm doing OK and have a lot of support from her family and friends who have pitched in to help deal all the details after someone passes away. I had met with her adult son with autism and he handled the news very well. My red headed Bonnie had proud Irish heritage and was a long time member of the local Irish American Society. Her son and I agreed that an appropriate place to hold her memorial would be a local Irish pub. We'll drink some Guinness and celebrate her wonderful life.

I went through a similar situation that resulted in the loss of the love of my life for 61-1/2 years the day after last Christmas. I will very much have you in my thoughts as you work through managing your loss. It looks like you have a very good support system, so don't hesitate to lean on them when needed. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

Gosh, I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I know it's hard to bear, but it's great that you have a lot of support to help you through it. I'll echo Pam's words: "May her memory be a blessing."

I feel for you and your loss. It is one of the things that we married folks must deal with that at some point, one or the other will have to go on alone. We were married just before Christmas of 1962 and we have come to realize that that time is inevitably getting closer. My heart goes out to you and yours!
