Whe towing a 5er, are extended mirrors required/necessary?

Pretty much necessary, unless the tow vehicle has extendable mirrors already.  Standard side view mirrors are not sufficient to see around the sides of the trailer, which is generally quite a bit wider than the tow vehicle (96-102 inches).

When I forget to extend my mirrors, I can still see pretty well. But it's definitely better with them out.
