Well here you go. I was looking at a 2013 kestone hidout 28 bhs at a dealer near me. so he quotes me a price of 23900. Ok I go home to do some reseach and to find out, this trailer has as many different msrp's as dealers. same tt, same options but why the differnt msrps. Im trying to figure a comeback price that will satisfy me and the dealer. but with differnt msrps ranging from 19973 to 29567 where should i start. The dealer I went to his msrp was 25495 so if I deduct 20% from that would that be a fair offer to him.

Dont worry about a "fair" offer to the dealer, as they are not interested in making their msrp "fair".

Make an offer you can live with.  He either accepts or declines.  You decide what to do next then.

When you hit a point where you'd rather have the trailer than the money, write the check and be done with it.

Don't worry yourself with a bazillion arbitrary numbers.  Buy the unit you like and get out and start having fun with it.  Don't overthink it.  You'll drive yourself nuts.

What I did was come up with a bottom dollar that I was willing to take offer.  Then figured the dealer would say 1,000$ more so to have a rebutle for that I would request they throw in a Equal-I-zer wd hitch and a 1000$ credit to their store.  Went in with the offer I wanted and just like I thought they came back with 1000$ above my offer so used my rebutle and they took it.  I walked away a happy camper (pun intended)!!!

There are a lot of MSRPs because Keystone doesn't publish one and each dealer makes up his own. Many of them throw in lots of aftermarket goodies or just plain inflate the price so they can then offer discounts  and high trade-ins. Caveat Emptor!

Ok so here's a little update. the dealer called me and came back with $22,400. with my trade. witch I owe $8000 on. (2008 starcraft 21sso hybrid) and $5000 down. I told him I wasnt too comfortable with that deal and he needed to do a little better. I need a payment of $ 225 a month to feel ok with the deal. he said that was the best he could do so I told him sorry that we couldnt do busness together and that was the end of the conversation. I have seen these trailers on rv trader going for $ 18492- 22500 so I think I did the right thing and Im gonna look elseware for it . even if i drive 700-1000 miles to pick up I think it would be a better deal. so what are you guys thoughts?

I can confirm that at least for our trailer (Pacific Coach Works Econ) the dealers make up MSRP's, so even calling it an MSRP isn't really true.  I was lucky with mine in that I contacted the manufacturer and got an MSRP from the sales manager, he did hem and haw a bit and asked me for the VIN number so he could get me the MSRP for my specific trailer... Maybe the manufacturers jerk around the dealers as much as the dealers try to jerk around the customers?

"$22,400. with my trade.".................... that sounds like they don't want to give you anything for your trade.

IMO.... you would do far better to sell your current trailer and pay it off. If you have any $ left, offer that as your down payment.

Looks to me like low retail is around $12.5K.... even the "Base price" is $10.4K........

The dealer wants to give you what you owe, clean the trailer up and sell it for (probably) $13K-$14K plus make a tidy profit on the new trailer.

My point is, sell it yourself for $12.5K and walk into the dealer with $4K cash for a down payment on the new trailer and I'll bet that you get a whole new deal....... if not, go somewhere else with cash in hand.

You did the right thing!  Don't buckle...  Find another dealer or sell it yourself.  If you sell it yourself then you can hit rvtrader.com and get a great deal on a new one.  Good luck.

I've never been a big fan of trading in anything.  You're generally dollars ahead to sell your previous vehicle outright, and make a cash offer on the replacement.  Things don't get quite so convoluted shuffling numbers around that way.

Friend of mine just bought a gorgeous Cougar High Country TT.  He saved like $9K going to a dealer 3hrs north, not a wholesaler, regular RV place that is just plain reasonable.  His trade..... Sold for $8.5K to a 'friend'.... I suggested trading as part of the deal (@ same, $8.5K) however he sold to his 'friend'.... Today he told me he has already had three visits from his buyer asking all the normal questions in infinite detail about everything.......  My friend is now wishing he traded....

The moral to that story is... "Don't sell anything to a friend".... It's the best way to ruin a friendship and nothing's worth that...

We just paid 18500 for that trailer at thompson in davenport ia

Thanks for all the input. Well I think Im gonna try to find this camper at a price of 19500 max. I really like the lay out and the big bunks in the back. but at 22400 I'll wait till I can find a better deal. and yes he was going to give me nothing for my trade just pay it off . from what I gather I should be able to get a little more than 8000 for it. so thanks again for the advice and knowlege this site has to offer.
