The wire doesn't need to be large. When you are dealing with roughly 25,000 volts and I'll assume a 14ga wire that should be able to carry 15 amps. Voltage x amps = Watts of power. So doing the math on those numbers (25,000 and 15), that is 375,000 Watts of power.....and that is on the primary side of the transformer. So if that transformer steps the voltage down to 120VAC, we divide that number into 375,000 watts and you get....3,125 amps available on the secondary side of the transformer......minus any losses in the transformer itself.
Just a slight correction, little things like this bug me....
It is a single phase transformer (one bushing on top) (diagram shows one side of HV winding grounded) so the grounded 25kV voltage value should be used in your calculation, 14.4kV.
Also, volts X amps = volt amps, or VA as shown on the nameplate... A 15kVA transformer and that equates to 15,000 Watts in a purely resistive circuit. That is the most this xfmr could have handled in normal conditions.

Actually, the 30A, 120V RV plug would be rated at 3600 watts, not 3000....so technically, only 4 RV 30Amps could be plugged in and stay under the 15K watts. 5 plugged in would put it at 18K watts. This of course is assuming that all of them were are full capacity draw....which likely isn't happening.

My apologies, did not calculate, just went by memory and that wanes at times, especially layin' in bed one finger typing on the iPad.

I understand, especially the memory fade thing. I've been retired from the electrical field for over 6 years now and while some things are still pretty fresh and clear, some of it....not so much. I never worked as a lineman, I was in Industrial Maint, so I don't have as much line/distribution type stuff as some do. Retirement doesn't make it any better either. :)

That would be a big unknown, hard to tell if they placed a wrap of 'armor' over the conductor for protection before securing the conductor to the insulator. Many factors determine the size/type of conductor for an installation.
 
It was snowing at Sac Pass today and I was out of propane, so I had to get out of there ASAP. It also was snowing in Ely, where I got my propane and much more.

I am now at a lower elevation, back at Bean Flat, middle of nowhere about 25 miles east of Austin, NV.

Anyway, here at Bean Flat, another "what is it ?" thingy of some type.

Certainly not a mailbox!

My guess would be a weather station, equipped with solar power for operation. Possibly NWS?? No clue...could just a county or state or even something corporate/private

The wire is ASCR which is a steel core wrapped with Aluminum. The steel core provides strength and the Aluminum carries the electrical current.

It's part of a network used to create the data used in forecasts. We don't know who's station that is, so we don't know what level of forecasting it's for. NOAA/NWS has its own network, and various industrial weather services use their own networks for specialized data.
 
That sure clears up what that thingy was.

That is neat, I had no idea we could view the camera on it.

BTW, it's not showing the rest area, but past it. I recognize the area that it does show of Hwy 50.

I often do a little hike close to the RV just before dinner time. I noticed this thingy right at the entrance to this place and I could not figure out what it is.
