New England Destinations

We are leaving from Buffalo and then moving on to Falmouth MA to visit our son over Memorial Day weekend,  Acadia National Park is our next stop.  I am looking for suggestions for our trip there and then back to Michigan. Any favorite places we should consider stopping / visiting?  We haven't been to Vermont or New Hampshire before.  Also considering returning via Canada (higher fuel costs?).  This your chance to tell us where to go!  Suggestions welcome!

We enjoy a stop at LL Bean in Freeport on the way up the coast, there is a city parking lot for overnight RVs a block away from the store. We also enjoy ambling up Route 1 if we aren't in a hurry to see the Boothbay Region and Camden/Rockport.

In NH Mt Washington and North Conway are popular tourist stops. We usuall drive across NH and Vt on US2 to Burlinghton and have enjoyed stops at St Johnsbury, and Montpelier. While staying at St Johnsbury we took a day trip up to the NE Kingdom which is a beautiful drive in back country VT.

As a former Vermonter one stop I usually recommend is Simon Pierce Glass Blowing studio in Quechee, VT.
Simon Pierce has real glass blowing, a nice store with glass products along with other Vermont Products. There is also a pottery studio, a nice restaurant (overlooking the river and the dam) and its own hydro electric plant.
It's near the Quechee Gorge (on rt4) which is also worth a stop.

The Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth NH is a ten acre open air  museum .

From Wikipedia  - "It features more than 40 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries in the Colonial, Georgian, and Federal style architectures."

They have exhibits in the houses showing how the people lived and how the houses were constructed (post and beam in many cases). There is also a cooperage showing how barrels were made 300 years ago.

If you like old stuff it is hard to beat.

If you need a break on your way, stop in and see Howe Caverns (http://howecaverns.com/) - exit 29 off the Thruway.

On your return trip take the northern route through NH and VT.  Beautiful country.  Be sure to see the Champlain Island area of VT.  When you get to NY, follow the Seaway Trail through the Thousand Islands to Buffalo.
If you decide on that route let us know and we can suggest some stops and campgrounds.

Take a route through ny's adirondacks. Stop by the Adirondack museum in Blue Mountain Lake, visit the Sagamore estate nearby, take a couple of day hikes. Visit Lake Placid, take a gondola up Whiteface. Ausable Chasm is a must. So much to do 6 million acres of forever wild
