Hello!  I am new to this forum; I found it while researching Class A rigs.  We have been camping for years; we currently own a 30' 2012 Rockwood Signature UltraLight 8315BSS travel trailer.  We do a good bit of "local" camping with our club, but we also dry-camp at least 3 times/year at NASCAR races. We've been very happy with the Rockwood, but now that we're both recently-retired (and thus getting a bit older & less energetic), we're considering moving into a Class A gas rig (plus the Class A would give us a lot more fresh and waste water capacity - very important at the races).  From observing our friends with their motorhomes, we believe the general setup and take-down will be much less trouble (and no 75-lb hitch to deal with).  We'll be looking for a used model on the FORD chassis with 22.5" tires (so that the doghouse will be smaller), and I'm thinking that we'll have to stay in the 2008-2012 range to keep the price within what we want to spend, although that is somewhat negotiable!

I've been looking at a lot of units online, mostly at Winnebagos, Itascas and Forest River Georgetowns, as they all have models without the TV hanging over the driver/passenger area.  We want the TV to be located more or less directly across from the couch/chairs for easy viewing.  Of course, we'd be open to other brands if they had the right options.

So, what I'd like to know is what kinds of issues should we be on the lookout for in a used motorhome, especially things that might not be obvious to someone who's never had to deal with all the various systems of a coach before.  Also, if there are any brands/models that we should specifically avoid, please let me know that, too.  The last thing we want to do is to invest a chunk of money in a lemon!!

I appreciate any help and suggestions that y'all can provide! Thanks so much!!

In many ways a motorhome is little different than a trailer - it has a water system, 12v and 120v electrical power, lighting, fridge etc. Obviously it also has an engine & transmission, and those need to be functional and reliable, but the house body and house systems remain the key items.

The Big Three gotchas are water leaks, old tires and weak batteries. Large motorhome tires are typically very expensive, and a Class A has 2 or 4 or more batteries.

Look in the RVForum Library in the Checklists section (see Library button on menu bar). There are several versions of an RV Buyers checklist.  Some of them are dauntingly long, so you may not be able or willing to check everything possible.
