Hello!
My husband and I have been RVing for 5 years now. We have a Winnebago View and love it.  We travel with our 13 year old Sheltie, and 3 year old Mini who is a Norwegian Forest Cat, and they both love it!  Now the question!
We have a 17 year old Orange Wing Amazon and this year will be her first on the road trip with us. She loves her travel cage and is used to being in the car. We have purchased a screen house so she will have outside time with us, and a flight harness.

We are wondering if there are any state rules for traveling with birds, and any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much and we are looking forward to being part of the forum!

Nancy :)

I owned an African Grey Parrot for 23 years and traveled with her for a year and a half. I have never heard of any rules about transporting birds across state lines. Fruits and vegetables yes, drugs and illegal aliens yes, birds no.

While we don't travel with birds, something about the crossing state lines with birds triggered a memory of the requirements for moving animals across state lines when we moved with cats.

A light search turned up this reference about health certificates possibly being required, but this is not a definitive source. Apparently, each state sets its own requirements.

I suspect the best source of information is a state veterinary board.

Good point!

We travel with a Maltese.  She used to ride on the back in her pet carrier when we were traveling by motorcycle.  Now she just lays up on the console in our superduty.

But we keep a copy of all of her vet records in all of our vehciles....never know when you'll need them in an emergency.  And many groomers require them.  It was a good thing we had them when we were in Quartzsite.....had to make an emergency trip to the vet.  She's all good now.

For what it's worth, we had a Rainbow Lorikeet for 18 years. That bird sailed around the world with us and visited over 40 different countries. Some countries required that the bird not be taken off the boat. Most countries didn't care.

As for traveling around the US..... I never even gave it a 2nd thought (maybe I should have).... he went with us everywhere (cross-country twice). I'm not sure who would ever stop you. However, the thought of a neighbor, that hated listening to the bird, calling the Health Dept (or just the CG officials to complain) could be an issue with a bigger bird.

I think that I would check with the Health Dept in any State that you plan to stay in for extended periods. The only issue that you will have is if someone complains.
