We will be doing our first RV trip in the Southern States in December, and plan to be at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for New Year's Eve. Is anyone aware of any celebrations we could get involved in?

Hello:

I have been to the South Rim at least six times, once preparing (stayed in cabin on Rim at village) to hike down into canyon for 5 nights. Love that place.

My thoughts would be to contact "STAFF" at one of the hotels, or talk to one of the Rangers at facility. My opinion is that there will be very few tourist at the south Rim New Year's Eve, but what do I know, never been there this time of year.

I'm sure you can get "invited" to a party someone is having. Talk to Consig???? (person to help people with services in Hotels). Use email to communicate with hotel staff or Service people at South Rim.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I worked at the South Rim for a winter.  The El Tovah hotel will likely have something going on there.  The campground has full hookups.  Be prepared for cold weather, 2 years ago when we were there it was about 20 below zero (F).

If you drive south another 300 miles there is an RVForum NY Eve party at Catalina ST Pk near Tucson.  It will be a lot warmer.

I would suggest you winterize your RV before going to the south rim in December and January. Otherwise your pipe will freeze. The south rim is at 7000 feet and it usually snows in the winter. But the view of the canyon will be unbelievable.

Thanks Tom, does 'winterizing' just mean putting anti-freeze in?
No, winterizing is a lot more than that. Here is an article from our library describing the steps:

We opted to leave the RV in a warmer climate when we went to the south rim last year during the time between Christmas and New Years.  The cabins mentioned earlier are rustic but nice enough, and the view is outstanding!  I would recomend doing the same for anyone especially an inexperienced traveler.

The RV Park has full hookups, so your furnace ought to take care of most items.  If you were dry camping there would be more issues.

Jeff has a good idea, someplace around maybe Sonoma and head up for a day or two.

Consider these two lodgings at Canyon.

They are next to each other.  You can step out onto their patios and be treated to a drop-dead spectacular view of the Canyon, which can be gorgeous in the snow.

Take commercial transportation to the Canyon and leave the winter driving to the pros.  Save your RVing for Death Valley and the southern deserts.

Bill - Sonoma is many miles away in the CA wine country.  Did you perhaps mean to say Sedona?

Generally speaking lodging on the rim of the Grand Canyon requires reservations a year in advance. However there are cancellations so it never hurts to ask. Those cabins were designed by Mary Jane Colter and they are fantastic.

FYI,
The temps for the next few days are tonight 28, tomorrow High of 66 low 30, Thrusday High 61, Low 34, Friday High 63, Low 30. This gives you some idea of the tems now and its not winter yet.
