A new RVer asks how long water can remain in their fresh water holding tank before needing to be drained and refilled. Experienced members generally agree that the interval depends on the water source and climate. For municipal (chlorinated) water, several members report leaving it in the tank for up to a couple of months without issue, especially if the RV is stored in mild climates or with access to electricity for occasional heating.

However, when using well water or water from unknown...

Morning to one and all in the RV community. My wife and I bought our very first RV a few months ago, a 2026 Thor Pasadena Class C unit, and we’re still feeling our way around this new lifestyle. My first question is how long should water remain in the fresh water holding tank before draining and refilling it?

My refill interval is based on the water source. If it's municipal water I'm OK with leaving it in a couple of months. If it's 'unknown' (campground) I'll dump and fill with municipal as soon as it's practical.

This may partly depend on climate, but for me I am ok with a few months, though this is partly guided by my situation, I store my coach in a shed with electricity and nearby water, but no dump option on the family cattle ranch about 20 miles from my house, nearest dump station is about 15 miles away. Therefore I tend to store it with at least partially full fresh water tanks, and let the gray and black tank slowly fill due to washing up, using bath room, etc. when I may be around checking on / working on the coach. Some years this may mean putting the coach away in September or October, and not using it again until the following April or May.

p.s. I don't winterize as we tend to only get a few nights per year where freezing is an issue, so it is simple enough to maintain heat in the coach during those times.

Thanks Mark. I forgot to mention that I use well water at my house in Northeast Florida, so it’s not chlorinated municipal water. I drained and filled my tank around a month and a half ago. Mike A.

Thanks for such a quick response to my query, Ike. I forgot to mention that I used well water at my Northeast Florida home to fill the tank about a month and a half ago, don’t know if that’s significant or not. We don’t worry about hard freezes here in the sunshine state, and when the temp does reach the low 30s, or even the low 20s at times, it usually doesn’t last very long. Happy trails to you.
