The closest campground I can find in that area is Illinois Beach in Zion. Here's what the TL directory has to say:

I should have said that I'll be in a 45' MH for the trip so I think both of those are too small, unfortunately.
So far, the only closest I found is at Empress Casino in Joliet and Lehman's in Marengo, both over an hour away.

Fish Lake Beach Campground (located at VOLO, IL) is nice. Their address is shown with about every town in that area. We have been staying there for about 6 years and still try to stay there when visiting our son in Lincolnshire (just up the road from Northbrook). I know of nothing closer. Others have closed and the spaces at Fish Lake are scarce. The area that we get is basically water and electric only, but you can dump the gray in an underground sump. They come around twice a week and pump your black tank, sometimes with a Blue Boy. This is included in your cost. Two and a half weeks cost as much as a month (about $500). Electricity is metered and costs extra (about$40/mo). Sometimes you can get a good spot with sewer. Try to get your reservations in as early as possible. Last minute stuff usually doesn't work. It didn't work for us last year. I have not seen the campground at Zion, but I have met some campers who say their coaches were greater than 30' and they did not have any problems. I do not remember their size, but I might take my 36 footer in for a try if I have to. Lehmans you mentioned is farther out but might be a backup if Fish Lake is full (they answered their phone last year so were open then). There is another at Algonquin that I want to look at this year. I have tried to check others out but there are only Condo's there now. If you find anything good but closer I would like to know about it. Hope this helps.

I generally leave the coach in Wakarusa, IN at the factory while being serviced and drive back into Chicago. I refuse to take the coach into the area any more even tho we have family in Highland Park.

Thanks, all! It looks like Lehman's, Fish Camp, and the one's in Joliet are all ok and about the same distance; about an hour out if the traffic is moving.

Joliet has to be further than Fish Lake from Northbrook. And as Bernie mentioned you would drive through Chicago to get between the two. Also The Empress is water and electric, 7 day max stay and Martins is close enough to I-80 to throw rocks at the semis 24 hours a day!

We have driven through Chicago a number of times, not on the Tri-State, and will do it again but we do pick our time to do it which is Sat. afternoon or Sun. morning. You just have to pick a lane and stay in it as much as possible and be patient.

Chris had no option but to stay in her lane. There were 18 wheelers on one side and cars on the other and the traffic was slooow. No way to change lanes even if she wanted to. Took a couple of hours to get through Chicago. Maybe, as you suggest, we picked a bad time, but I can't recall the day or time right now.

We go west of Chicago and then back east to get to Fish Lake. Traffic is no worse than any small to medium sized city. We leave Fort Wayne and travel west on US24 to IL47, next go north to IL120 and back east to VOLO. A little out of the way but traffic ain't bad. From Fish Lake you can take IL60 to US41 or where ever you need to go (probably about25 miles). IL60 used to be a country road but it now has a lot of construction and build up. Still isn't Chicago traffic. There are other good ways to get down to Northbrook. From Lehmans it is closer to 50 miles. Lots of services north of Volo at Fox Lake. As far as I am concerned, Fish Lake is the only place in that area to stay if you can get in. We have driven through Chicago twice. The first time was great, the second, a nightmare. Never again!
