Not a good time to go to Death Valley (8-6-22)

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing!

I have reservations at Furnace Creek Campground in mid-December, but that might be a little early for a flower bloom.

Wish they had said something about the campgrounds and visitor centers, instead of just the hotel, although it looks like whatever road that is will need some plowing.

According to some DV naturalists, the rains that make for a good bloom are the ones in autumn and winter, not summer. The bloom comes in March/April if conditions are right. I will be watching the forecast this fall. This is the first year in quite a few we aren’t getting to DV for the November 49ers Encampment. Kevin is scheduled to get a knee replacement, and it doesn’t look like the timing will work. 😢

I doubt there is ever a good time to visit Death Valley. 😁
You are so, so, so wrong! Death Valley and Yellowstone tie for my two favorite parks. I have been to both many times, and both still hold areas I haven’t explored. Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48. And if you think it is just sand dunes, you are very wrong. I cheerfully admit I don’t go in the summer, but November through March are great.

I love Death Valley during the months you list. It can be cool or even chilly, and there are no crowds, believe it or not. And the cool weather makes it very comfortable to walk or hike. Last time I was there, the coyotes were cutting through the Furnace Creek Campground during the day, and the last day I was there, I took a photo of ice on Furnace Creek!

I used to lead wildflower walks in Death Valley. It’s the fall (November) and early spring (January-February) rains that bring the great blooms, not flash floods in August.

According to the Superintendent’s statement today, Route 190 from Furnace Creek to Pahrump is expected to open Tuesday. Many roads won’t be fixed for quite a while. Until 190 opens, there is no recreational access to the park.

I'll have to take a ride out that and report back. I live in Pahrump. BTW, if you ain't never seen death valley it has something for almost everyone.

Please do! Words and pictures would really help. I love Death Valley. We will be missing the 49ers Encampment this year due to Kevin’s knee surgery, and I was already feeling blue. Our next trip is probably their dark sky get together in February.

The main area of damage appears to run along Hwy 190 east to west inside the park. There are road washouts west of Stovepipe Wells along that 20 mile downgrade, on the Beatty Cutoff Road and Hwy 192 east of Furnace Creek with fast running water damaging roads and depositing debris on them and in the Death Valley Inn parking lot. Of note is there are no reports of damage in Beatty itself, just along the cutoff road inside the park. Most likely no news is good news and the storm missed Scotty's Castle, some 50 miles north of Furnace Creek.

The latest report is they're concentrating on re-opening Hwy 190 from Furnace Creek towards Pahrump, presumably to facilitate work crew and equipment access to do the rest of the work. They graded a single lane along that route over the weekend to allow people trapped at Furnace Creek to exit with police escorts and originally said the road would be open to two way traffic today (Tuesday). Now they're saying August 17th. I expect the park itself will be closed much longer than that.
