Just got around to reading a flier from a nutritional store in Des Moines from last fall.

It discusses low carb foods, especially the sweets and how they label them.

Dr Adkins and the other low carb diet authors support a concept called the Effective Carb Count (ECC). THis lets you subtract the carbs from the total that do not affect blood sugar levels.
-fiber. not digested.
-sugar alcohols (mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol, lactitol, xylitol) sweet taste, same mass as real sugar, but mostly not absorbed from the gut.
-hydrogenated starch hydrolysate. contains mannitol.
-glycerine. fat is one of these with 3 attached fatty acids. glycerol is also a sugar alcohol.

The sugar alcohols mostly give up only half as many calories as sugar when metabolized. The other good news is that they are poorly absorbed by the gut. The bad news is that they are poorly absorbed by the gut! The germs further down in the colon feast on these compounds. Exuberant intake will result in rebellion.

this URL has a simple explaination.

Good article.  I think any of us who have been on the low carb diet and decided to have an Atkins Endulge bar (or two or three) quickly found that while one was acceptable--additional bars on the same day resulted in "discomfort".  Also, consuming these bars does slow weight loss for most people.  Sure wish it was as much fun to lose weight as it is to gain it!  Ha ha  Kay
