Delco PF 454 = 1 qt
Delco PF 1218 =1.5 qt
Delco PF 392 = 2 qt

I have a 2003 Winnebage Brave 30ft Workhorse the PF 392 does not extend below the leveler jacks cross bar,,, YMMV

A lot of vehicles can use two sizes of oil filters. My Y2K RV is one of them. I normally use the more expensive larger filter. I use the K&N HP-3002 in it which also increases the oil capacity by at least a half quart.

There is nothing wrong with using the smaller OEM filter. Even though I like to use the larger, I doubt if it really makes much of a difference in the engine reliability.

I would NOT hesitate to use the smaller OEM filter if I had one around to use. But if I need to order it, I will go for the larger. Which I just did. My two HP-3002s cost me more than $22.00 each.

I don't think these are being made any more, but it is what I have always used in my Y2k RV. I can now only find them on E-Bay.

My 2013 Silverado 5.3 V8 also has 2 filter lengths, reason unknown. I buy the longer filter just because it's easier to change. I do suspect the longer filter would last longer filtering oil.

I just ordered a oil filter for my little camper. LF14000-NN It is 11.6" tall and 4.73" around, Cheapest I found is on Amazon for $69.00.
I could almost stack 4 of the OPs filters in it.

The internet is full of discussions about this, for the 8.1 and also the 5.7, they both used the PF454. The gist is, you can use a larger filter, but clearance is definitely an issue on the car applications (LT1-equipped Camaros, Firebirds, Corvettes). Not sure on the motorhomes or 8.1 applications, you'd have to check if it's something you wanted to do. The Wix cross-reference for the PF454 is 57099 and is the same size. Unless you have a preference for the Wix brand, AC Delco filters are generally good.

Using a larger filter doesn't allow you to extend oil change intervals, it doesn't really cool any better, nor has it shown to really "filter" better, either. GM designed the engine with the short filter, and it's what both GM and Workhorse used to recommend back in the day. Some people use taller filters anyway for their own reasons. The AC Delco PF1218 was a direct replacement but it actually got smaller about 15 years ago. The Wix equivalent of that (51060? don't quote me-) is still good size and holds about 1/2 quart more oil than the PF1218 if I recall correctly.

If it uses a LF14000-NN, it's not a little camper. What's the oil capacity in that engine, about 7.5 gallons? 🤣

The small (standard size) filter is what the factory oil change specs are based on. It's sufficient for the task. If you like to extend the change interval, one of the larger capacity sizes (see WME reply) is probably a better choice. Or if you think the engine was subjected to a dirtier environment that might be contaminating the oil more quickly, e.g. extended use on dirt roads. More filter capacity never hurts as long as there is physical room for it.

I watched YouTube contortionist and Stretch Armstrong videos before I removed and installed the little oil filter on our Ram 2500 4x4 Power Wagon's 6.4L. With the factory 12,000 pound Warn winch and the disconnecting front sway bar blocking easy oil filter access. If they had made the filter any larger, I wouldn't be able to jam it up through and in-between the narrow passage way.

On my WH the filter sticks straight down between engine and trans, is easy access and makes very little mess. I use NAPA 21060's, same form factor as AC Delco PF1218 and Fram PH13. I would think the shorter ones would be harder to get at and spin.

I had an old heavy duty 1973 GMC 3/4 ton 4wd, 4spd with a granny 1st gear... The 350cu came from the factory with a 2qt filter... I always replaced with the same one... I figured more oil is better for cooling, lubing and filtering... Can't hurt, right?..

The best thing about the smaller filters is that they don't weigh a ton when filled with oil. Nor is there much of a reason to pre fill them when installing.

Try lifting a pre filled 1R-1807. Or better yet try getting one off without spilling 2+ quarts of used oil all over everything. :ROFLMAO:

I use to think my 5.9 held a lot of oil but this one is listed at 40q or 10 gal plus the filter. Yes I use Shell Rotella T-6. Some thing to note on the deference in filters. When I got my 5.9 I was planning on changing the oil so picked up a filter for a Doge 5.9. Well they arn't the same. The RV engine takes a larger/ bigger thread where you screw it on.

Interesting, does your owners manual actually say to pre-fill the oil filter? I and everyone I know change our own oil - and spark plugs, and alternators starters and tires, and anything else that doesn't require an engineering degree - and I can't recall anyone ever mentioning that they pre-filled their oil filter. I know I've never done it, even when I was maintaining backhoes and bulldozers back in the day. Besides, you would need to know the capacity of the filter and subtract that from the total the manual calls for before adding the rest of the oil through the fill-hole to the crankcase.

My Cat filter holds a little more than two quarts. That means that all the bearing surfaces wold be rotating without oil for a long(ish) time.

I have always pre-filled and intend to continue doing so until I can't change my own oil any more. That's when I'll retire from RV'ing.

I can (usually) do simple arithmetic in my head and figure out how much more oil to add. ;)

Don't get me started on Allison Transmission filters.
