Oil filters

"I only use brand X oil filters, 'cause a guy who writes articles on the internet says they're the best". "..... "I just can't figure out how he gets paid though, he must do it only because he cares".
Not everyone bases their entire purchasing decision on what other people say and there are still people out there who care about the quality and integrity of their work, even if that doesnt make the news.

I have been using Mobil 1 and Motor Craft filters on our Ford F53 chassis since new. I change the oil every 5000 miles and now have 134,000 miles on the engine and it burns no oil between changes.

I ignore mileage and change the oil every year in each of my motorhomes. I also use the MotoCraft oil filters in my F53, the FL-820-S. I also use the Ford Motorcraft Synthetic Blend oil that the manual recommends (can buy it at Autozone). Eight quarts of this stuff:

I use whatever that filter guide at Walmart says is for my V10 and will spin on that jim-jammi on the engine block.

I used NAPA filters for years. They would do half off sales once a year and I would stock up. NAPA has recently switched suppliers and WIX is no longer manufacturing the filters for NAPA, someone else, not sure who and not a big name, probably foreign.

I now buy WIX from O'Reilly's. Purolator makes a good filter and I used them on some of my vehicles for quite a while also. If you cut any filter open and find a string wrapped around the element and tied, it is a Purolator. I think the Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator.

Many of the oil company branded filters and some store brands, are made by a company called Champion Filter, no relation to the spark plug folks. These are actually a decent filter.

Had an opportunity to change my own oil while boondocking at our daughter's.
First, the plug was cross-threaded.
Then I found the filter was stuck. Likely cranked on with a dry gasket.
Ended up with one of those strap wrenches that has a 1/2" breaker bar socket.

Well just remember... There are many oil change folks named.. MURPHY.

And as you know If it can be done wrong... IT will be.,

On gas engines I use the NAPA Proformer oil filters and NAPA oil. I change oil every 3000 miles using Synthetic Blend oil and 5000 miles on vehicles using Synthetic oil. Keeping the oil changed does the most at keeping and engine in good shape and clean. I had to change the water pump on our Taurus that is inside the engine. Had to remove the valve covers, front cover, and timing chains on the engine to replace the pump. Had around 130,000 miles on the engine and there was no sludge, or signs of wear in the engine. Their is lots of poorly made filters out there, you just have to do your own research to find one your happy with.

I don't know about the NAPA Profomer filters but the NAPA Gold filters used to be made by Wix but are now made in China

Many years ago, I let oil change places do my oil changes . I let them screw up three times before I made my own rule that if it is something that I can do myself, I will.

The last time I used them, the next day I was more than 100 miles from home in the middle of nowhere, at night, when I lost all oil pressure when the oil filter dropped to the road.

Fortunately , I always had 5 quarts of oil and a filter in the car and I was able to fix it on the side of the road. But I was then worried about if a motorcycle came up that road with all the spilled oil.

That was before the cell phone days, so not much I could do in the middle of nowhere.

I once dumped a bike when the sun was in my eyes and I did not see many quarts of oil on the road. So I know what can happen. I used to wonder how that much oil can end up on a road, but I learned the hard way.

I assume six quarts of oil dumped on a road justifies a call to 9-1-1 these days.

Did you get calls like that when you were telling the cops where to go?

I use nothing but Motocraft filters on our three Fords. I get them wholesale from a relatives shop in Paso Robles. Cat filters from a local Caterpillar dealer. Allison filters directly from Allison. The only non OEM filter I use is the primary fuel filter and water separator. Racor or Wix. Cats have a secondary filter.

The article you linked to is no longer there but if they didn’t take the filters apart I question their methodology and conclusions.

Fram used to be OK, Now they are the worst. All paper and cardboard inside. I was given 6 of their Gold filters when I bought my Mustang. Threw them away.

Fram has (had?) three main types.

Extra Guard (PH-orange can--Cheapest)
Tough Guard (TG- silver can)
Doubleguard (DG-black can--most expensive)

Based on a website years ago, where an engineer carefully took all three apart, the conclusion was the TG was a decent oil filter. Their cheapest and most expensive Fram filter was (is?) pure junk. The one in the middle was well designed, and decent quality, the Fram TG.

The DG has Teflon inside. Back then Dupoint (who then made Teflon) says the stuff does NOT belong in engines. And it was built like a PH but added Teflon.

But there was nothing bad about the TG.

No never got on but at accidents when oil was duped I'd call My daughter's God Father (Fire Dept Dispatch) and he sent a crew to wash it away.,

(Kept that 9-1-1 stuff all in family don't you know)
