Put the meter on the omega symbol and short the leads together. You should then have zero ohms, or very close to zero, such as .01. That is to make sure it is working correctly on ohms.
If you measure something with those same test leads, it will normally have a much higher number than the dead short above. If it says 35, that is 35 ohms. If it says 3.5, that is 3.5 ohms. If it says 75K, that is 75,000 ohms. If it says 1.2M, that is one million and 200,000 ohms.
A dead short is zero ohms resistance. A total open (leads apart and testing nothing at all) is infinite resistance. Some digital VOMs blink at infinite resistance.
