hi, I have a 1999 Winnebago motor home with an onan 7500kw gas generator that is giving me SERIOUS problems. It will start ok but it wont make power. In the last couple years I have spent about $3,000 getting somebody to fix it. It was rewound twice. anybody else have problems like this? I ran it out to the shop (30kms away)at least 5 times now and I'm getting tired of it!  someone else said you cant fix those onan generators. is that true? any answers?  thankyou

They certainly are fixable and for $3000 you could have replaced most of its components.  Are you taking it to an Onan dealer or an independent shop? And what model is it?  Also, if it is not producing power, most Onans will shut down andshow a trouble code (blinking light on the start switch).

The most common 7500 watt Onan is the Quiet Diesel, model HDKAJ and it is normally very reliable. It is a DC generator with a pair if inverters to produce 120vac power. Is that what you have?

Had the same issue with my Onan 5kw gas generator, There were symptoms before the final failure, it would make power sometimes, sometimes not.  I did make the mistake of allowing it to run out of fuel under load, no power after that. I had good luck with Flight Systems, http://www.flightsystems.com/, They have a basic online troubleshooting guide plus techs available to help. All I got from Onan was a list of repair facilities, none closer than a 5 hour drive for me. I explained my problem to the online tech, he suggested that the regulator had failed, explained some simple tests to make, very helpful, I bought their replacement regulator,  and all is well, generator is working fine. P.S. make sure the slip rings are clean, the are very sensitive about that.
