Our Winnie Class C remodeled for two

I have been debating on whether or not to post this, finally decided it may be of interest to RVers  wanting a small comfortable RV for two.

In 2010 we decided we wanted to change the way we traveled by RV so we in 2011 we sold our 30? two slide Winnebago Minnie and the Jeep we always towed.  We purchased a used 19 1/2? Pleasure-Way Class B and did many extended trips in it for over the 18 months we owned it.  We really liked the small MH the way it drove and the idea we didn?t need to tow anything, but it was just too small.

We wanted something a little bigger, and decided Winnebago?s model 24V class C like the Minnie, Outlook, Spirit & Chalet floor plan would work for the way we wanted to remodel it into a Winnie for two.  Two good things about the 24V plan is a flat floor under the dinette or optional couch and a RV queen bed.  In June we found a private party that had a 2006 Winnebago Chalet 24VR for sale and purchased it.

Since purchasing it we have removed and replaced the following:  The small swivel chair by entry door under TV cabinet taken out and replaced with a small oak storage cabinet with a wall mounted 26? Visio LED HDTV.  DVD/VCR and added shelves in the old TV cabinet.  Existing vinyl flooring covered with new carpet except at bathroom area.  Large dinette removed and replaced with two La-z-boy rocker recliners and some new paneling to cover the holes on the wall from removing the dinette.  We made a small table that we set up in front of our chairs for eating and card playing.  Removed the bathroom door and replaced it with privacy curtain.  Since completing the remodel we have been on two trips extended trips without towing anything and have found it is working out great for us.

That?s the story of Dick & Ellen?s Winnie for two.

Dick - she's gorgeous!  I looks like you just drove it off the showroom floor!

I can't imagine downsizing.  I realize many have made the transition from a 30'+ coach to smaller/much smaller unit but I think I would be immediately frustrated when the second thousand pounds of stuff wouldn't fit  :D.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for sharing your handy work.  Did you secure the two La-z-boy rocker recliners to the deck?  If so, I would be interested in knowing how you secured them and if you had any major problems in the process.

Thanks,
John

Good info for those who may downsize.

I like the curtain instead of the bathroom door.

I see that the bed is a regular mattress, not the chopped off corner version we had on our 24-footer.

What's up front in the overhead area ? Bed, entertainment center, or something else?

Wendy

Thanks for the nice comments.  The chairs are not fastened down, I use a combination of seat belts and ratchet tie down straps when we travel.  We did this when we replaced the couch with La-z-boy chairs in our 30' winnie and had no problems as long as no one used them when we traveled.  Wendy you have good eyes when we purchased it, it had a very cheap replacement rv queen mattress that we replaced with the proper cut corner mattress made by Mattress Made 4 U in Reno.  The new mattress was great on our last trip.  The up front area is a normal class C cabover bed.  Ellen talked me into moving the privacy curtain forward so it covers things we have stored up there.
Regards, Dick

Very nice! We have a small class C too and have cut the dinette down to half size so that I have room to maneuver in my wheelchair. It's amazing how much room a dinette occupies. Two people don't need a large dinette and removing it opens up the entire motorhome. We use a curtain in place of our bathroom door too.

Why do folks like the curtain instead of a bathroom door?  I think I can understand it for access issues if using a wheelchair, but otherwise..?

Seems more roomy, less closed in (which I guess it is). And you don't hit your head on the door when you bend over.

Our prior coach had a concertina door for the bathroom, rather than a curtain; It hung from a semi-circular ceiling track. I told Chris when we bought the coach that the concertina door would be a problem and, sure enough, I hated it the entire time we owned the coach.

We had so many doors in our little house, one of the first 'improvements' I made five years ago (gad, has it been that long ) was to remove three or four of them and put away.  It made a huge improvement in the livability and functionality of the limited floor space.  Sometimes simple changes reap big rewards.

Having the recliners was a huge improvement for us.  The freedom of sitting up or reclining at different times than the DW is great.  Good job on the overall project!
