There are a couple kinds - one an open weave that lets the grass breathe and maybe survive for a few days with the carpet on it.  The other is a tight weave that usually kills the grass fairly quickly.  regular indoor/outdoor carpet will kill everything under it in a just a couple days, plus it gets really heavy with accumulated dirt (or rainwater).

You know, if one has grass, one wonders why you need a carpet.  I have always thought of carpets in connection with dirt or gravel sites
