@Lou Schneider

You will probably find this interesting:

"A Nevada town has claimed the top spot as Zillow’s best place to retire in the U.S. Pahrump, located about 60 miles west of Las Vegas, ranked above all other cities based on climate and the percentage of retirees in its population."

I have been there many times, I have always enjoyed Pahrump. Perhaps the best part is it is NOT in Clark or Washoe County. No smog checks required for one thing, which I now need to do with my Y2K RV, which means driving it here from Auburn just for that. Registering it in CA is NOT an option.

IMAO, smog checks on RVs should be exempt. They are rarely used all that much in the same state as they are registered in.

isnt that most popular rather than best place to retire?

For NV, it could be both.

But like anything else, it depends on who is asked.

The only thing I do not like about Pahrump is that it doesn't have my favorite toy store, HFT. Nearest one is in Las Vegas and I cannot stand being in that large dump.

The Reno area has several, Reno, Sparks, Carson City. The one in Sparks is a lot closer to me than the one in Reno.

Diving deeper into another Zillow article they claim Pahrump "boasts several golf courses and wineries." News to me, there are a couple of tasting rooms and as far as I know only one golf course. One of the tasting rooms was shut down a couple of months ago when they were caught re-bottling Franzia box wines and claiming them as their own.

The climate here is nice in the spring and fall and seldom drops below freezing in the winter. But it's often windy and you really don't want to be here over the summer when temperatures regularly go above 100 degrees for weeks on end. Something I found out during the Pandemic lockdown, since then I try to be elsewhere during the summer.

The other advantage is unlike most of California we're pretty much immune from wildfires and other natural disasters, there isn't that much in the desert to burn. The worst we get are occasional floods, Pahrump is at the bottom of an ancient lake and when it rains we collect runoff from the surrounding mountains. Worst case is the low lying parts of town get a couple inches of floodwater for a day or two until it's absorbed into the ground.

I wonder if a ham bought W6OBB's place there.

It's still owned by Art Bell's widow, on the south end of town about a half mile before you get to the legal brothels. All of the antennas are still up and the property looks well maintained but as far as I know it's been silent since Art's death.

Art also established Pahrump's first radio station, KNYE. The FM station is a couple of miles from his house and is what's shown on his Wikipedia page, not his extensive home setup. Art broadcast his Coast to Coast AM program from a studio in his home's ham shack, not from the radio station.

Lou, I thought it funny that the climate was described as “warm.” Even if someone is comparing it to nearby Death Valley, it would still be HOT. And to answer RVLifer’s question, Zillow describes is as “popular,” not “best.” That just means a lot of people looked at the housing there. We’ve been there dozens of times, though we stay in Death Valley. The Thai restaurant, Chat Thai, is fabulous.

Same here, although to be honest the spring and fall shoulder seasons can be quite nice. At 2700 ft Pahrump is usually at least a few degrees cooler than Las Vegas. It only really gets hot during the summer and even then, just plan on doing outside stuff in the morning before it really heats up, then retreat to air conditioning in the afternoon.

That's what I did while I was forced to stay here during the Covid lockdown. Work outside in the morning then retreat to the man-cave I built in my outbuilding. Even when it gets over 105 outside a small (5000 BTU) window air conditioner keeps it at a comfortable 70 degrees. Although I usually just plan to be elsewhere during the hot months.

Is there anywhere in NV that doesn't get "really hot" in the summer?

Well, I can think of one place, the Mt. Rose Summit at ~9'000' elevation.

Mt Charleston in the Spring Mountains between Pahrump and Las Vegas is just shy of 12,000 ft. The town of Mt Charleston on the Las Vegas side is at 7500 ft and is noted for it's hiking trails. It has a 64 room hotel and is a popular place to cool down during the summer. In the winter it's a ski resort.

I see it is just to the east of Pahrump, an area I have never been to.

Is there any place up there for motorhomes?

Nope, just a narrow and winding road from US 95 on the Las Vegas side to the summer homes and Mt Charleston Lodge. It's main building burned down in 2021 but they still rent a couple of dozen cabins. Take the motorcycle.

If you go there check out the Desert Wildlife Refuge.

There are several hikes up Mount Charleston that I'm sure you'd like

The Spring Mountains are lovely, but they also are the reason we don’t take that route to Death Valley in the winter. There can be lots of snow, and the grade up and down between Vegas and Pahrump is fairly intense. Not an issue without snow, but not one I want to travel in the winter with the RV.
