I learned that word trick when I was like 15. If you can't remember the number for Pi another short cut is Diameter*2 X .785 which gives a close approximation.

5*2 X .785 = 19.625
9*2 X .785 = 63.75

Around here in Beef Country the cattlemen have to count their cows. Count the horns and divide by two. It's a much easier method than the older one of counting the hoofs.
