I used to set the points and plugs on my 1950 Ford with a matchbook cover. One thickness for the points and two for the plugs.

My Brother once overhauled a farm tractor.. No start.. I grabbed a cheap VOM and figured out the point were not conducting when closed.... He ask me how much I paid for the meter ($8.00 as I recall) Told me they had one back at school cost $1,600 did the same job.
