Preventive Maintenance ?water heater?

Thought I would pull my anode rod from my hot water heater. It?s a good thing I did, the old one was in bad shape. A $10 part could have cost me hundreds down the road if left alone. I put my new one beside the old one for reference.

This brings the question, How often do you change your anodes? As needed, or a set time.

I used to check mine 2X per year, once in the spring when cleaning after we got home from being snowbirds and once again in the fall before we left.  We usually left in November so the MH was winterized and I checked when I winterized.

I check it every time I drain the tank

Hard to tell how long they will last. Depends on the minerals in the water. You need too set up a schedule and eventually, as long as you're using water from the same source, you'll know how long they'll last.

For you newbies, only the Suburban water heaters use an anode. The Atwoods do not.
