I have never used one of the doohickeys, but I have a question to those who have: Are they relatively easy to transport to the dumping station? I have always guessed that they must be cumbersome to move, so I have been limiting our stays to full hookups sites, considering it's usually four of us camping.

The handle or a bracket just drops over a trailer ball normally. Since I don't have or want a hitch on our RAV4, I use a short loop of poly rope with a large knot that holds well when I close the rear door on the rope with the knot inside. I replaced the original 5 MPH plastic wheels on our Thetford tank with steel ball-bearing wheels rated for 15 MPH. The dump station where we are right now is about 1-1/2 miles from our site.

When we had trailers with limited waste tank capacity, we did much the same as NY_Dutch. Just take it slow and easy dragging the tote tank to the dump station. Especially if there is a speed bump or dirt/gravel road. The better quality (read: more expensive) totes have larger/sturdier wheels and are equipped to make draining the tote easier when you get there.

While we use the tote to empty our tanks at home (limited access to the to the septic dump connecton), we usually use a pump out service at campgrounds where there are no on site sewer connections . Not a big deal either way.
Safe travels and all the best.

I have never owned one. My question is, do you ever fill it and have waste still in the hose?

No, because our portable tank is the same capacity as our holding tanks, and the holding tanks are never 100% full when we drain them. When the tank level monitor shows 95% to 87%, it's time to dump. Sometimes when the black tank doesn't fill the portable tank enough, I disconnect the 3" hose from the motorhome and replace it with a cap with a standard hose fitting. Then I use a short garden hose section to finish filling the portable tank so I have good control to avoid over filling.

Noticed the tire and now the portapoop mounted on the square "bumper." Just a suggestion to add inspection of the welds for that bumper to the frame annually to help avoid surprises and keep other safe.

We've seen some square tube bumpers (on different brand RVs) where the constant vibration and age have ripped the welds.

Just want you all to be happy when you pull in next to us - rather than wondering where your tire and portapoop might have gone!

We've never had a tote and have marvelled at how easy it looks. So far, we say; thank goodness we have large holding tanks!

Good point on checking the welds!

We can usually go two weeks without dumping, but I prefer to dump in the afternoon the day before we leave. That way, we don't have to wait in line at the dump station on our way out. The small amount we use the tanks before we get home is no problem, since we'll be hooking up at our full hookup site at home anyway.
