Remove all caulking?

Do I need to remove all the old caulking off my roof before I re caulk and seal it?

It?s laid on pretty thick and very ugly but I don?t know what the process usually is.

There?s large piles of caulking around the poop exhaust and antenna. Do I just clean it well and reseal what looks cracked or try to get it up?

I?m concerned cause in one area that I tried to pull a chunk up it tore a little pea size hole on the roof.

Oh yes I?ve been warned.  I?ve got dicor for the top and proflex for the sides but not sure what has to be removed

That is some ugly caulk. I repeat I would try and remove it.
When and if I gave up trying to remove it then I would clean it thoroughly and recaulk over the old

Its going to be a lot of work to remove as much as possible. At least until level with the surrounding trim and membrane.  Cleaning with detergent and the Dicor cleaner until your'e tired of cleaning is absolutely necessary.  I'm having to follow up behind a mediocre roof coating job a local repair center laid down only 7 months ago. Had they spent some extra time cleaning, the edges would not had started separating/peeling.

The corners were even uglier than the roof the difference was I didn?t have to worry about the rubber roof tearing up.

They used some type of dark grey sealant on the corners that I?ve had to use a lot of chemicals to remove and unfortunately some paint came off with it.

Maybe I can get the stuff on the roof to come up in chunks. I unfortunately don?t have a covered area to work but I can always throw a tarp over it when I?m done for the day.


I have some goo gone caulking remover but I?ll have to see if it?s safe for the rubber roof

See if you can use a razor blade knife to level it out. Then caulk in any holes or gaps and slap Eternabond over it. Remember the Eternabond will need to be replaced in 20-30 years.
