Looking for suggestions on a replacement mattress.  Last year was our first summer in our 2008 Jayco Jay Feather and we quikcly realized the need to upgrade.  Has anyone done is and what suggestions/recommendations do you have?

We replaced ours with a Zinus 10" memory foam short queen and love it. We purchased it through Amazon and if I remember right it was around $230. They had a 6" memory foam as well, but we wanted a deeper one because we have no box springs.

We changed ours to a home sized queen. As far making a recommendation. That would be a little tough. It will depend on what you like. But by switching it opened up our choices.

Warning if you decide to do like we did you will have to make a bigger platform for the mattress. It was easy for us I don't have a clue what you may need to do to make it work.

The best recommendation I can give is measure what you have, and if it's an RV size, measure to see if a standard size will fit. Be sure the slide(s) will close if going larger. Go to a few places and try out mattresses until you find what you like. If standard size, buy the one you like. If it has to be an RV size, see if you can order one of the model you like in the required size. What suits anyone else is a mute point.

I have replaced one and will soon do another. The one I replaced I went to a shop called Tri-County Matress Factory in Detroit (it's on Telegraph road between 5 and 6 mile roads) and they took measurements and custom cut one to fit... Now I name them not to suggest you drive to the West Side of Detroit. but there are other companies like them all over the United States.  I really like the result.

The one I have now is due for replacement.. Possibly 2 weeks from now.. (Long story) if not 2 months. Wal*mart an Camping world both carry the ZUES  I think I need an 8" to fit in my slide out.

The bit issue.. Saw on Facebook where a fellow RVer went to replace his queen size and found out (I'm guessing after laying out money) that the RV matress is what is called a SHORT QUEEN.  it is not as long as a full queen. an a full queen may well not fit.. (That is if you have a "Queen") sales types never mention the word "SHORT" unless they are a matress sales type.

I've checked with several matress warehouse/distributor types an they do not carry short's as a rule

But WalMart can order it and Camping world and one assumes most RV dealers can. as well.

My suggestion is measure it and do some shopping at your regular box stores to see if you have a custom size or a regular size...

My first camper had a 3/4 bed (bigger then a twin and smaller then a double)... I shopped at a place my sister-in-law recommended and will definitely go back there .... we spent just over $100, but could have spent $300+ .... It really depends on what you like in a mattress... I need a seriously firm mattress and hate mattresses that hug you while you sleep (eg. pillowtop or memory foam)

Do your measuring and sus out if you need custom or not... then go from there....
There are lots of small custom shops around that will make the size you need. (at least here in Windsor, Ontario area)

Good luck

Sleep Number has RV sized mattresses. We did the topper thing in our Jayco Seneca. That worked ok, but our Dutchstar has a RV King Sleep number. All I can say is it really works.

Only negative, is you need to drain the air down to 20% before climbing mountains. They told us this in our orientation.

If you have a standard size mattress, it's no different than choosing one for your home.  A "good mattress" is a highly individual choice, e.g. amount of firmness, support, type of materials, air vs conventional, etc.  Nobody else can choose a mattress for you.  Shop the major bedding stores and also online, e.g. Brooklyn Bedding, Purple Bedding, etc.

If you have one of the oddball sizes that some RV manufacturers use to squeeze a bed into an insufficient space, your choices are more limited but still much the same. You may have to deal with a custom mattress maker to get the type you like in a non-standard size.  The few ready-made "RV mattress: sizes available are typically low end designs.

Go shopping pick a mattress YOU like.  Regardless of what others say its totally up to you what your comfortable sleeping on.  Last time we bought a new mattress for our S&B and bought the exact same for our fiver.  Slept the same no matter what except for size.

You have what they call a "camper queen" size mattress, it's the same as a queen only 5 inches shorter. I replaced mine with a DynastyMattress it's a camper queen 11" memory foam. I got it on Amazon, not cheap but well worth it. I think it was around 400 bucks back in 2014. It still sleeps as good as new and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for all the feedback!  I will test mattresses out if I can, but I know when don?t have a standard size mattress like you?d buy for your home now and was looking for any suggestions on where to go to get a RV size replacement.  I very much appreciate all the suggestions!

I would look upon the places that advertise "RV mattresses" with a jaundiced eye, but I'm picky about mattress quality.  There are many shops that make mattresses in any style and type, so figure out what you like and then shop for a supplier.  When we had a coach with an odd "RV size, we went to a local factory and had one made to our specs. Wasn't anymore than a retail store and we live in a small, rural city.

Here are some online sources as well:

We did a 4" memory foam topper over the existing mattress, which turned out to be more comfortable than I thought it would be. The size was okay, but we needed to trim off foam for the rounded corners.

Most any upholstery place can make you a foam mattress of any size you want. They can also let you feel how firm a piece will be before you order it.  Most foam sheets are only 54 inches wide so if you have a 60 inch queen (the standard width) they will need to glue a 3inch piece on each edge or one 6inch on one side. They can also make a cover for it from just about any material you desire.  We got a 5 inch firm foam bottom piece and then a 2 inch softer topper piece made for our standard queen size (60x80) bed.

The Dynasty Mattress I bought on Amazon was a direct fit for My 2013 Tracer Ultra Lite "camper queen" except it's a thousand times more comfortable than the factory mattress LoL. It came in a box, it was rolled up, I followed the directions, remove old mattress, place rolled up mattress on the bed THEN cut the straps and unroll it. after that let it sit for a few days. It was by far the best improvement I've made to my camper, hands down. It sleeps as good as My Serta Perfect sleeper in the house.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but a related question if someone can answer it. We have a Sleep Number short queen in our coach and one side continually loses air, so we're thinking of ditching it and getting a memory foam mattress. If we do, what must be done to get rid of the Sleep Number mattress? I don't know anything about them, having never owned one for the home, but I am sure there is a pump and numerous air tubes going to the mattress that will have to be removed. Is there anything tricky that must be known, or can you just rip them out without issue?

Or, is there an easy way to find the leak in the one side of the mattress? If we can avoid the hassle of having to refill it every night, we might decide to keep it.

I would check with a sleep number store or even online. I think you could just replace the inner bladder that is leaking. Not sure how expensive that would be compared to a new mattress, but it couldn?t hurt to check.

Vicki - thanks for the idea. I called Sleep Number and they said the problem could be either the air chamber on that side of the bed or the pump. In either case, the cost to replace would be between $239 and $300. They sent me a video that shows how to swap the hoses on the air chambers to determine the problem. There is always a possibility that that hose to that air chamber is loose and if tightening it solves the problem, that will be fine. However, if either the chamber or pump need replacing, I think I will go with a new mattress since we really don't care for the Sleep Number anyway.

My friend have a Jayco and I remember how he replaced his mattress also. We went camping and we overslept in the RV and he had such comfortable mattress! It was "Countess" 5-inches thick. Good one!
