Hello,
We have a 2020 24’ Leprechaun 220QB
The current mattress is a 80” x 60” with a notch cut out to allow the bathroom door to open and close. (Actually the corner has been cut down)
Question: Is it better to buy a rectangular mattress and then have an upholstery shop custom fit it or purchase one that has already been notched out?
Thanks for any recommendations

Can you give us a picture so we can get a better understanding of what you are up against?
Can the door be reconfigured the way it swings?

I used to live a couple miles from a custom shop but...
Not sure which is better would (As Rene said above) need to have a photo or eyes on.

I found this if it would help..

We have done both the old springs recovered and cut down a very dense foam mattress. We ended up not rebuilding the RV that need a corner cut like what you look like you need. But ended up not using it as it just had to much that needed done. The RV not the bed. So we got a small van and after 3 ever increasing foam pads just gave up. When Mom moved into a home. She gave us her 12inch foam mattress almost new but about 6 inches to long and about 8 inches to wide so I unzipped it from its cover got my BIG bread knife and cut it to size we needed. I am fairly good with a needle and thread so both covers were sewn by me and fit pretty good. I LOVE my new van bed so much!!

The sewing is a bit wonky because I sewed them by hand and in the van, but once the sheets are on nobody can see it and the seams which can be annoying to sleep on are on the bottom so no problem. I did have to customize a few sheets to fit it but again, I know my way around a sewing machine. Pretty simple if not looking for pretty. If you don't sew, I'm guessing you can find someone who would maybe do it at a senior center or??

Most home bed foam mattresses come with covers that zip around the long side so you should be able to unzip cut and zip it back up and stitch it tight if you want to keep wrinkles under your back away. much cheaper than a fancy cut thing and much cheaper than an upholstery shop. Just make sure you don't get something with individual coil things or something that may not allow you to cut it.

Arrrr! Corner bed. Our first hard sided travel trailer came with a corner bed. After only 2 years we traded the camper for another one that had a walk around bed.

We were much younger then, but after a very SHORT while, we got tired of climbing over each other to get in and out of bed, especially in the middle of the night for bathroom visits and when the dogs needed to go outside.

One night my wife said, "This is enough. Tomorrow we look for another camper." We did, and that next day we signed the dotted line.

But, to help the OP. If you get a foam rubber mattress, you can cut it to size yourself.

If this is the floor plan,it looks like the door could be modified to open against the bed
Agreed - I'd extend the wall the toilet faces and make a pocket door on the wall to the left of the toilet (when sittiing on it).

My first thought was, "Now I've seen everything." How could this be approved in any valid business model?

How about an accordion door? They look cheap and don't take up much room at all.

We’re going to replace our mattress once we get home, we’ve been out since December and are heading home now. We spoke to a representative of mattress insider when we got our HYPERVENT AIRE-FLOW MOISTURE BARRIER who said they could build any mattress we wanted. We’re going to order it when we get back: Home

Maybe they could help solve the problem?

You would still need to extend the wall or just leave the mattress over hang. Although It would be easier to make the bed without the wall

I'd get one custom made to the right size & shape. Making a custom mattress is not a big deal anymore and many companies will do it. You can even order it online and have it delivered. Google 'rv custom mattress' to find suppliers.

The whole mattress discussion is a very personal thing.

Some love a super cheap option off of Amazon.... and others will drop the bank for a $1000-$1,500 solution.

We are in the same place, trying to decide,,,

I think we will by a foam/hybrid solution....and put a real down topper on it.

Try RV Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding. Many styles sizes and custom makeup. Free shipping, and 120 Day trial period! Great YouTube reviews.

Wilderness is another RV Mattress company who will also custom make any size you need .

I bought my mattress 2 years ago from a local retailer in only mattresses. They also told me they can have any style mattress custom made locally for a $50 upcharge.
Most larger metro areas probably have locally made mattresses, use a local retailer, not a national chain trying to sell you a Serta for $1500.
